Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team had a 9-2 lead after 30 minutes of play on Wednesday afternoon, but the Maritime Privateers stormed back in the second half to come away with a 13-11 victory on GoValiants.com Field.
Senior
Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) with four goals and one assist led the Valiants, while freshman
Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) added three goals and an assist of his own. In goal, senior
Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) collected 19 saves to tie a season high.
Manhattanville opened the scoring as senior
Bill Motherway (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) scored his 11th of the season to open up the scoring. Less than 40 seconds later the Privateers tied the game as Maritime converted on an extra-man opportunity.
The Privateers took a 2-1 lead, but Sahakian netted his first goal of the contest with 8:33 left in the first quarter to even the game at two. A lot of time ticked off the clock until the next goal, which came from Motherway with 15 seconds left in the frame and put the Valiants up by one.
Sophomore
Tom Tarczali (Stratford, Conn./Saint Joseph) got the second quarter off to a good start with a quick strike just 44 seconds into the second quarter. Three minutes later Normandin got in on the scoring with his first of the afternoon to put his squad up 5-2.
Tarczali picked up a man-up goal, and Sahakian picked up his second as well a few minutes later after taking a long pass from classmate
Jordan Kolb (Sisters, Ore./Sisters). The team continued to roll offensively as Sahakian and Normandin picked up goals late in the half to give Manhattanville a 9-2 lead heading into the halftime break.
The wheels came off for Manhattanville in the third quarter as Maritime controlled the majority of the period and scored the first three goals of the half. Sahakian stopped the streak with 1:03 left in the third to put the Valiants up by a 10-5 score.
Normandin got things off on the right foot in the fourth quarter with a much-needed goal to help stop the Privateer rally. Maritime then rallied off six straight goals to tie the game at 11 with 3:19 left in regulation. Matthew Messina then picked up the go-ahead goal with 1:47 left in the period. The Privateers scored once more in the final minute to put the game away with the 13-11 win.
For Manhattanville, they outshot Maritime 23-14 in the first half but the Privateers edged the Valiants out 43-36 in final shots. Ground balls were also close with Manhattanville scooping 44 to Maritime's 41. One major difference in the game was face-offs as Maritime out drew Manhattanville for 20-of-27 on the game.
In goal, Poletto fell to 0-9 on the year despite his 19 saves while also picking up six ground balls and causing a turnover. Nick Barbuto picked up the win for Maritime, while making 12 saves and yielding 11 Valiant goals.
Manhattanville (0-9) will have a quick turnaround before Friday's game against Babson at 4 p.m. with coverage of the game available on GoValiants.TV. Maritime (4-8) will play again on Saturday in Skyline Conference play against Kean at 4 p.m.
