Men's Lacrosse Suffers Setback to Babson in 20-5 Defeat

One bright spot in Friday's loss was freshman Nate Coleman picking up his first career goal.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Babson Beavers scored the game's first nine goals in the first quarter, and it proved to be all they needed as they rolled to a 20-5 victory over the Manhattanville men's lacrosse team on Friday afternoon on GoValiants.com Field.
 
In what started out as the nicest day of the spring season in regards to weather, it turned south quickly as Babson rattled off nine straight goals in a 9-0 first quarter. Alex Patinkin led the way for the Beavers with three goals and one assist, while Alex Packer added two goals and an assist in the opening period. Kyle Barsalou also had two points with a goal and an assist through the first 15 minutes of play.
 
The second quarter began with Manhattanville putting an end to the Babson run when freshman Nate Coleman (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) picked up his first career goal at the 13:11 mark of the period, with an assist coming from senior Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) for his 10th helper of the year. Babson then scored two more goals unanswered to add to its commanding lead at 11-1.
 
With just under seven minutes remaining in the half, senior Bill Motherway (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) notched his 13th goal of the season as it was once again Sahakian to nab the helper. Manhattanville struck again less than a minute later as this time it was sophomore Tom Tarczali (Stratford, Conn./Saint Joseph) to rattle the twine as Sahakian picked up his third assist on as many Valiant goals. Babson scored once more in the final 28 seconds of the half and took a 12-3 lead into the intermission.
 
After halftime, Babson stormed out of the gates quickly once again with three straight goals including Patinkin's fourth of the game and 20th of the year.
 
Down by a dozen, sophomore Jack Polak (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) ripped a hard shot and was able to get it into the Babson net after receiving a pass from senior Jordan Kolb (Sisters, Ore./Sisters). One more Beaver strike in the third period made the game 16-4 heading into the final period of play.
 
In the fourth, senior Justin Figueroa (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) netted his first goal of the game with freshman Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) picking up his first point of the afternoon with an assist. Babson rattled off four more goals to reach the 20 mark and put the game away by a 20-5 final.
 
In goal for Manhattanville, senior Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) took the loss after registering 18 saves and allowing the first 16 goals in 52:07 worth of game time. Sophomore Ray Zimlin (Graniteville, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) came on for the last several minutes of play and picked up three saves while yielding the final four Babson tallies.
 
The win went to Babson's James Whalen, who picked up one save in the first quarter without allowing a goal. Adam Daroff allowed three goals and stopped four shots in the second quarter, while Michael Spera also made four stops and allowed one goal in the third. Ryan Lee closed out the game and made one save while allowing Figueroa's tally.
 
Manhattanville (0-10, 0-0 Freedom) will head into league play against the Eastern Eagles on Wednesday afternoon with game time slated for 4 p.m. Babson (5-5, 1-0 Pilgrim) will head on the road this coming Tuesday when they travel to take on the Connecticut College Camels at 4 p.m. in non-conference action.
