Men’s Soccer Hangs Tough in 1-0 Loss to #6 Rutgers-Camden

Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team hung around with #6 Rutgers-Camden but couldn't pull off the upset in a 1-0 loss on Wednesday night.

Sophomore goalkeeper Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) played well in net for the Valiants contributing nine saves but limited offensive opportunities allowed the Raptors to persevere to a perfect 8-0 record.

The first half ended with a 0-0 tie with the Raptors outshooting the Valiants by a total of 14-1. Silber and the Valiants defense remained strong and gave Manhattanville a chance to fight back in the second half.

The Valiants came close to scoring the first goal of the game in the 53rd minute when freshman Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) connected with the crossbar on a shot from the left side. The attempt by Macchia depicted how close Manhattanville was against the #6 team in the nation.

The Raptors eventually capitalized when senior Stevan Austino scored on a shot from the right side that was assisted from sophomore Connor Hurff in the 63rd minute. This goal would be enough for Rutgers-Camden to gain the edge and take the 1-0 victory.

Manhattanville applied pressure towards the end of the game with shots from freshmen Omar Parra (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) and Viron Protoulis (Cape Town, South Africa/Reddam House) but none good enough for a goal.

Rutgers-Camden outshot the Valiants by a total of 25-5 in the match, but Manhattanville certainly gave the Raptors a scare.

Manhattanville coach Gregg Miller was disappointed in the loss but pleased with the effort of his team. "I'm not a believer in moral victories but I was very pleased with the effort and organization of the team tonight," said Miller. "We were able to compete with a very talented team who are one of the most free-scoring teams in the nation.

"We are disappointed to lose the game, but we finally have some positives to take forward into our next game."

The Valiants will play next against Stevenson University at GoValiants.com Field on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game can be streamed on GoValiants.TV approximately 10 minutes before the match starts.
