Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team had trouble hanging around with Muskingum College and fell short by a score of 4-0 on their home turf at GoValiants.com Field on Friday night.
It was a physical game that was closer than the final score indicated, but Manhattanville had trouble finishing all night long and it came back to haunt them as the night progressed.
Muskingum struck first in the 9th minute on a goal by freshman Andreas Pfefferkorn that was assisted off the foot of Austin Tourville. The rest of the first half would be played neck and neck until it ended with a score of 1-0.
Pfefferkorn and Muskingum poured it on in the second half, starting with a goal in the 54th minute from a corner kick that was deflected off of a Valiant defender and into the back of the net.
Manhattanville had numerous scoring chances to inch closer in the game after that second goal but couldn't quite get the job done. Freshman
Dan Lorandini (Garden City Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) thought he had a goal in the 56th minute until it was called back because he was offsides, and another opportunity came from Lorandini in the 60th minute as he connected with the post.
Muskingum senior goalkeeper Will Hess also was brilliant in net for the Fighting Muskies. He ended his day with five saves and gave his teammates enough support for the victory, including a pair of sprawling saves soon after Lorandini hit the post to keep the game at 2-0.
Each team had a total of 10 shots, but it was Muskingum who would deliver the goals.
Pfefferkorn sealed the deal for Muskingum after tracking down a through ball from classmate Liam Roche for his second goal of the night. Roche joined in on the scoring just two minutes later in the 78th minute to increase the lead to 4-0 in favor of Muskingum.
The Valiants actually outshot Muskingum by a total of eight to five in the second half but couldn't quite sneak anything past Hess or freshman Mathais Buchner.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) gave up four goals and made three saves for Manhattanville.
The Valiants will have a tough test on Sunday, when they travel to New Jersey to face the #11 team in the nation, Montclair State, at 7:00 pm.
