Box Score DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Manhattanville men's basketball team had five players reach double figures in scoring, but it was not enough to overcome a 37-17 deficit in free-throw attempts as Delaware Valley pulled out an 85-80 victory over the Valiants in Freedom Conference play on Thursday night at James Work Gymnasium.
Senior
Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) was the game's high scorer on the night, as the forward connected on 10-of-14 shots on the way to a 22-point night while also adding seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals. Senior
Colin Campbell (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) and sophomore
Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) added 15 points apiece for Manhattanville (6-10, 2-3 Freedom), while sophomore
Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) chipped in 12 and junior
Wills Flynn (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) scored a season-high 10 points.
Delaware Valley (9-7, 4-1 Freedom) also had five players reach double figures, led by Nick Sullivan's 20 points – 10 of which came from the charity stripe. Zach Sly had 17 points to go with nine assists and six rebounds, followed by Adonis Fleming with 15 points.
The first half was a very evenly played 20 minutes of basketball, featuring 10 ties and seven lead changes and seeing neither team earn a lead of more than four points. The largest run of the half came on a 6-0 stretch for the Valiants that turned a 15-12 deficit into an 18-15 lead with 10:28 to go, thanks to four points and an assist from Campbell. The teams continued to battle back and forth, with the Valiants leading by four at 35-31 before three Sullivan free throws with two seconds left made it a 35-34 game at the break.
Led by a 5-of-6 effort from Bramswig, Manhattanville hit 13 of its 24 shots (54.2 percent) in the opening half, including 11-of-16 shooting from inside the arc.
The game remained close to start the second half, but the Aggies used a 10-0 run that featured two three-pointers from Jay Donovan and a pair of Fleming buckets to open up a 56-46 lead with 10:40 remaining. The DVC lead grew to as many as 12 at 61-49 with 8:51 left, but the visitors got a three-point play from Camacho and a Campbell three to quickly get back within six. Although the team consistently stayed within striking range, the Valiants' problem quickly became a defensive one, as the visitors put points on the board but could not stop the Aggies from doing likewise at the other end.
Manhattanville did everything it could to stay in the game down the stretch, scoring on its final six possessions to put some pressure on Delaware Valley. But the Aggies did not help the Valiants in the slightest, going 11 for 14 from the line over the final 79 seconds to seal the win.
The Valiants cooled off somewhat in the second half, hitting 16 of 36 attempts (44.4 percent), but still finished the game at 48.3 percent from the field, including a 9-of-24 mark (37.5 percent) from beyond the arc. The Aggies finished the night shooting 27 of 54 from the field, and while the percentage was not great the team's 24-of-37 shooting from the line proved to be a big difference in the game.
Manhattanville will welcome its alumni back to campus this weekend for its annual Alumni Day activities before the Valiants host King's (Pa.) in a Freedom Conference matchup at 3 p.m. at Kennedy Gymnasium. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV beginning at approximately 2:55 p.m.
