Connor Quigley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) exploded for a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers as the Manhattanville men's basketball team won at DeSales for the first time in seven years with a 72-59 victory over the Bulldogs in an important Freedom Conference contest on Wednesday night at Billera Hall.
The win was a key one for Manhattanville (8-10, 4-3 Freedom), which moves into a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings with DeSales (10-8, 4-3 Freedom) and FDU-Florham at the midpoint of the conference season. It is also the team's first win in Center Valley since Manhattanville's first-ever visit to Billera Hall in 2007.
Quigley came up huge for the Valiants in the victory, shooting 9-of-13 from the field and an electric 6-of-7 from beyond the arc. The junior guard also added seven rebounds, five assists and two blocks in an excellent overall game.
Seniors
Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) and
Colin Campbell (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) both made solid contributions as well in the win. Bramswig netted 13 points while adding four rebounds and blocking four shots, and Campbell played the role of playmaker with a season-high eight assists to go with 10 points.
Manhattanville led almost the entire game on Wednesday, as Campbell opened the scoring six seconds in and sophomore
Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) followed with a jumper 58 seconds into the game that put the Valiants ahead for good at 4-3.
Up by one at 12-11, the Valiants used a 13-4 run to earn their first double-digit lead of the game at 25-15 with 10:57 left. Maestre and Quigley scored all 13 points for Manhattanville during the run, as Maestre scored the first eight and Quigley closed it out with five in a row.
The junior followed that up by scoring Manhattanville's final eight points of the half by himself on a jumper and a pair of three-pointers, helping the Valiants take a 33-24 lead into halftime. The trio of Quigley (13), Maestre (10) and Campbell (8) combined for 31 of the team's 33 first-half points, as the visitors shot an even 50.0 percent (13 for 26) over the opening 20 minutes.
Quigley continued his unconscious shooting to start the second half, knocking down three more from beyond the arc in the first 2:11 to help open up a 14-point lead at 44-30. The lead grew to as many as 16 points following a Bramswig jumper and two free throws by sophomore
Andrew Winter (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) that made the score 48-32 with 15:34 left on the clock.
DeSales made a little run to get back within eight points at 50-42 with 11:16 remaining, but the Manhattanville defense stepped up and held the Bulldogs without a field goal for the next 6:30 to regain control of the contest. The home team missed 10 straight shots during the long scoreless stretch, which was capped by a Bramswig trifecta that put the lead back up to 59-44 with 5:56 remaining and sent the Valiants on the way to a victory.
Bramswig had all 13 of his points in the second half to help the Valiants keep control of the game, while Quigley added 12 more on the way to his career-high output. Manhattanville as a team shot an efficient 14 of 23 (60.9 percent) in the second half to key the victory.
