Valiants Can't Sneak Past SUNY Potsdam in Non-Conference Battle

Senior Jack Bramswig led all players with 22 points on Tuesday.
Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. – Despite a game-high 22 points from senior Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville), the Manhattanville men's basketball team came up a few shots short in suffering a 68-65 loss to SUNY Potsdam in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night.

Bramswig had a good night offensively for Manhattanville (5-7), leading all scorers thanks to 9-of-18 shooting to go with six rebounds and a game-high five steals and two blocks. Sophomore Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) also reached double figures with 14 points, followed by sophomore Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) with nine points and eight boards and classmate Andrew Winter (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) with seven points and seven caroms.

Potsdam (2-7) had four players reach double figures in the win, led by Zac Adams with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Rob Duquette chipped in 12 points and a team-leading seven rebounds, while Joe Estramonte added eight points, five rebounds and a game-high four assists.

The game was tied four times in the first seven minutes, with the teams knotted up at two, four, six and eight. The Valiants used an 8-0 run to open up their largest lead of the half at 16-12, thanks to a Maestre layup bookended by three-point plays from Winter and junior Niko Emanuilidis (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville). Potsdam managed to outscore Manhattanville by 12 points over the next seven minutes to take its largest lead of the frame, 33-25, but a Winter jumper and a buzzer-beater from junior Wills Flynn (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) cut the lead in half and put the visitors in striking range down by just four at 33-29 at the break.

After 20 minutes, Manhattanville managed eight more shots than Potsdam and as a result posted a 13-12 edge in field goals. The Valiants were still in the game despite connecting on just 1 of 9 attempts from long range.

The Valiants battled back to retake the lead at 41-40 following an offensive rebound and jump hook by Bramswig with 13:14 in the clock, and the score continued to remain close after that. Six straight points by Bramswig helped Manhattanville regain the lead again at 54-52 with 7:26 remaining, followed by a big three-pointer from Maestre that gave the visitors their largest lead of the game at 57-52.

But Potsdam followed with a 10-2 run capped by an Estramonte three that gave the Bears back the lead at 62-59 with under four minutes left. The teams traded points to keep the Valiant deficit at three with less than two minutes on the clock, before another key Maestre jumper got the visitors back within one again at 66-65.

Offensive fouls in both directions kept Potsdam up a point with under a minute to go, and after missed shots for both sides Manhattanville was forced to foul to keep the game going. Estramonte went 1 for 2 at the line to make it 67-65, and the Valiants called timeout with less than 12 ticks left to set up one last play.

The ball went into the paint for Bramswig, who looked to get hit on the arm as he put up an off-balance jumper. However, the shot did not go and the whistle was not blown, and the Bears came down with the rebound to secure the win.

The Valiants finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (26 for 54) from the field, but only 3 of 17 from beyond the arc. Potsdam shot a nearly identical 48.0 percent (24 for 50), but shot slightly better (6 for 16) from three.

Manhattanville will round out non-conference play on Saturday, as the Valiants travel across town to D3Hoops.com #18 SUNY Purchase in the 24th meeting between the Anderson Hill Road rivals beginning at 7 p.m.
