Softball Splits with Meredith and Farmingdale State at Dot Richardson Games

Senior Shauna Mulkerin launched her first homer of the season against Farmingdale.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Manhattanville softball team split a pair of contests on its third day at the Dot Richardson Spring Games, as the Valiants dominated Meredith in an 11-0 victory before suffering a tough 5-4 loss to Farmingdale State to conclude the day at Hancock Park.

Freshman Shelbee Damianos (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) was on fire at the plate for Manhattanville, hitting .857 (6 for 7) with two doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored in the two games. Senior Shauna Mulkerin (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) also hit over .500 on the day, going 4 for 7 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored, while junior Rosaria Callara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) also went 4 for 8 for the Valiants. In the circle, senior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik) allowed only two earned runs in 14.0 innings of work.

The first game of the day was an offensive onslaught for the Valiants, as Manhattanville pounded out 14 hits in an 11-0 victory.

Damianos led the offensive barrage with a perfect 4-for-4 day, driving in four runs and scoring three times. Callara went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Mulkerin and freshman Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) both had two hits, an RBI and a run scored apiece.

The Valiants got started quickly in the top of the first, with sophomore Alyx Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) walking to lead off the game and eventually coming around on a Damianos RBI single.

But the big inning came in the second, when the Valiants plated five runs to blow the game open. Mulkerin drove home Callara with a one-out double to double the lead, and a Scapperotti single loaded up the bases for Damianos, who promptly unloaded them with a double that made the score 5-0. Diemicke followed with a run-scoring single of her own to give the Valiants a six-run advantage.

Manhattanville padded the lead with one more in the fifth and four more in the seventh. Callara made it a 7-0 game after five innings with an RBI double that scored Damianos. The scoring didn't stop in the final frame, with a Callara single, an RBI ground out by senior Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan), and a Meredith error accounting for the final four runs.

Taylor (1-3) was the beneficiary of all the offense, scattering five hits and striking out six in the complete-game win. The righthander moved into a tie for sixth place on the school's all-time list with her fifth career shutout.

The second game of the day was much closer, as Farmingdale State outscored Manhattanville by two runs over the final four innings to escape with a 5-4 victory.

Mulkerin was the team's top offensive producer in game two, going 2 for 3 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Damianos also had a pair of hits and drove in a run, while Diemicke also had a run batted in as well.

After the teams went scoreless over the first two frames, Mulkerin launched the Valiants' first home run of the year with one out in the third to open the scoring.

Farmingdale State came back with single runs in the fourth and the fifth to retake the lead, but Manhattanville responded with two in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead. A leadoff double by Savage was followed by a Mulkerin RBI single, and a sacrifice fly by Diemicke scored Mulkerin to put the home team back in front.

But then it was the Rams' turn to come back again in the sixth, with Marissa Monaco providing the big blow with a two-run single that plated a pair of unearned runs. The visitors added one more in the top of the seventh, which proved to be very important when Damianos singled home Scapperotti to make it a 5-4 game in the bottom of the seventh. An error moved the freshman into scoring position with two down, but Taylor Webb got a strikeout of Callara to end the contest.

Webb (2-0) allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out six in seven innings to earn the win. Taylor (2-4) pitched all seven innings for Manhattanville, allowing all five runs (only two earned) on only six hits.

Manhattanville has one more day down south, as the Valiants look to end their trip to the Dot Richardson Spring Games on a winning note with contests against Heidelberg at 9 a.m. and Lesley at 1 p.m.
