Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) led all players with seven goals and eight points overall as the Manhattanville women's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the season with a 17-8 triumph over SUNY Old Westbury in a non-conference matchup on a chilly Thursday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Honovich had a great individual game for the Valiants, scoring seven times with an assist while also controlling four draws and causing three turnovers. With her eight-point explosion, Honovich vaulted over former teammate
Melissa Goncalves '13 and Abbe Grimes '09 into third place in career points at Manhattanville with 248. She sits 16 points behind former Valiant great Liz McNamee '03 for second place all-time.
Freshman
Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) had a solid game with three goals to go with a program single-game record 12 draw controls, while junior
Saba Naji (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) also scored three times. Senior
Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and junior
Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) both scored twice as well for Manhattanville (1-7) in the victory.
For Old Westbury (1-7), Sara Bey and Nicole Giambrone both scored three times apiece, while Maria Dischley added a pair of tallies for the visitors.
The visiting Panthers controlled play for the opening 15 minutes, limiting the Valiants' scoring opportunities and scoring three times to take a 3-1 lead. But after six minutes of scoreless play, Marcimo and Honovich scored 19 seconds apart to start a run of five straight Valiant goals to end the half, giving Manhattanville a 6-3 lead at the break.
Halftime did not quell the home team's momentum, as Manhattanville scored the first five goals of the second half to stretch its run to 10 and open up an 11-3 lead with 20:10 remaining. Honovich and Dalsey did all the damage during the second half of the run, with Honovich scoring three straight goals and then assisting on the first of two in a row from Dalsey.
The Panthers attempted to get back into the game with under eight minutes to go, when Dischley scored twice in 11 seconds and Bey found the net less than 30 seconds later. But Naji came back with a quick strike of her own and Honovich sealed the game with her sixth and seventh goals of the afternoon.
The Valiants finished the game with a 31-19 edge in shots, but their real was advantage was a 20-7 edge in draw controls. Junior
Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) made five saves to pick up her first win of the year, while Jackie Cartagena turned aside nine shots in a losing effort.
Manhattanville will continue non-conference play on Saturday, when the Valiants host Ramapo beginning at 1 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV beginning at 12:55 p.m.
