Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) went 5 for 5 with four runs batted in, including a game-winning three-run double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Valiants came back to defeat The College of New Jersey, 8-7, and earn a split on the team's first day at the Dot Richardson Spring Games, held at Hancock Park on Saturday.
Diemicke led the Valiants by hitting .625 (5 for 8) on the day, recording three extra-base hits and driving in a team-high four runs. Junior
Rosaria Callara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) added three hits in seven at-bats, while freshman
Shelbee Damianos (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) had two hits and drove in a pair.
The second game of the day was easily the more exciting for Manhattanville, as the Valiants scored five times in the final two innings to overtake the Lions and post a dramatic 8-7 win.
Diemicke was the offensive star for the Valiants, as her five hits match the program single-game record set by Nicole Bifulco '11 on April 5, 2009 at Merchant Marine. She also drove in four runs and scored once as the only Valiant to record more than one hit in the game.
The game featured back-and-forth action from both sides, as the final nine half-innings of the game saw at least one run scored. After TCNJ scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, Manhattanville got one back in the bottom of the third on an RBI grounder by Damianos, and the teams traded runs again in the fourth, with the Valiants again scoring on an RBI single from Damianos.
The Lions built up a 5-2 lead with two more in the top of the fifth, and the lead stayed at three headed into the bottom of the sixth when an RBI single by junior
Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) was matched by an RBI double by Kristen Lake the next half-inning.
Diemicke got the designated home team back within striking distance in the bottom of the sixth, as she tripled home freshman
Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) to make it 6-4 and then scampered home on an RBI ground out by senior
Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) to make it a 6-5 game headed into the seventh.
TCNJ got one more in the top half to make it 7-5 headed to the Valiants' last at-bat, but that just managed to increase the drama. Manhattanville was down to its last out after a ground out and a fielder's choice, but Damianos and senior
Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik) worked back-to-back walks that loaded the bases with two down. That brought up Diemicke, who worked the count to 2-2 before lining a ball to the wall that scored all three runners and gave the Valiants the improbable win.
The heroics made a winner out of senior
Emily Frawley (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains), who allowed two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of relief to earn her first win as a Valiant. Taylor got the start and allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits over 4.1 innings.
The first game of the day had a lot less drama, as Manhattanville managed only one run on six hits in a 5-1 loss to Rochester.
Taylor and Rochester's Brittany Grage matched zeroes for the first three innings before the Yellow Jackets scored twice in the fourth on a two-run double by Grage. Rochester added three more in the sixth inning, again helped by a run-scoring since from UR's starting pitcher.
Manhattanville managed one run in the bottom half of the sixth, taking advantage of two Rochester errors to push Damianos across home plate, but that was all the Valiants got in their first game of the day.
Taylor (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four in 7.0 innings. Grage (1-0) scattered six hits and allowed just the one unearned run in a complete-game win.
Manhattanville (1-1) will return to action tomorrow with two more tough games at the Dot Richardson Spring Games, as the Valiants take on Rensselaer at 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. meeting with NFCA #25 Ithaca.
