Valiants Stymied by Farmingdale State in Non-Conference Loss

Junior Meghann Haggerty scored her first goal of the year on Saturday.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's lacrosse team could not overcome a strong Farmingdale State squad on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field, falling by the score of 20-3 in a non-conference matchup.

Farmingdale State (3-0) brought a balanced offensive attack to Purchase, with nine players recording at least two points. Jackie Kennedy had a game-high five points with two goals and three assists, followed by Brittany Rosino and Christy Thoden both with two goals and two helpers. Nicole Marzocca also assisted on four goals for the visitors as well.

Manhattanville (0-3) had three players find the net once, as senior co-captain Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas), junior Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) and freshman Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) scored once each.

The Valiants had precious few offensive opportunities in the opening half, as a mixture of turnovers and a strong Ram defense limited the team on attack. After Haggerty scored 2:36 into the first half to even the score at one, the Valiants had only one more shot the rest of the half, and as a result Farmingdale State scored 12 unanswered goals to take a 13-1 lead into the half.

The second half went no better for the home team, as the Rams posted an 11-4 edge in shots and a 7-2 edge in the scoreboard to cruise to the win.

Sophomore Caitlin Sosa (New York, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and junior Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) split time between the pipes for Manhattanville, with Sosa making seven saves on 20 shots in the first half and Shaughnessy stopping three of the six shots she faced in the second stanza.

Manhattanville will return to action on Wednesday, as the Valiants travel north to Worcester State for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Lancers.
