Softball Drops a Pair to RPI and #25 Ithaca on Day Two of Spring Break

Freshman Shelbee Damianos had a team-best three hits and two RBIs in Sunday's two games.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Manhattanville softball team dropped a pair of games on its second day at the Dot Richardson Spring Games, falling to Rensselaer by a 6-1 score and NFCA #25 Ithaca, 6-3, on Sunday at the National Training Center.

Sophomore Alyx Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) and freshman Shelbee Damianos (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) led Manhattanville with three hits each on the day, with Damianos also adding a team-best two runs batted in.

The Valiants were done in by one bad inning in Sunday's first game, as a five-run fifth inning turned a 1-0 lead into a 5-1 deficit as the Valiants dropped a 6-1 decision to Rensselaer.

Scapperotti led the Valiants at the plate, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Damianos and senior Shauna Mulkerin (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) also had two hits apiece, with Mulkerin also scoring the team's lone run.

After both teams went scoreless over the first two innings, the Valiants struck first in the top of the third. Mulkerin led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by junior Rosaria Callara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), and Scapperotti followed with an RBI single that put Manhattanville ahead 1-0.

Meanwhile, senior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik) pitched in and out of trouble while keeping the Engineers off the scoreboard through the first four frames, but that changed in the fifth, when RPI scored five times to go ahead. Morgan Kollmeier put her team ahead for good with an RBI double, and then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 game. Senior Emily Frawley (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) relieved Taylor after the third score, but a sacrifice fly by Taylor Ten Eyck and a solo homer from sister Morgan helped to put the game out of reach.

Taylor (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on only four hits in 4.1 innings. Frawley tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. For RPI, Kristina Weltzin (1-1) allowed only one run on seven hits to pick up the victory.

In the second game of the day, #25 Ithaca scored four runs in the top of the first inning and was never really threatened the rest of the way, posting a 6-3 win over the Valiants.

Manhattanville managed only three hits on the afternoon, as all the team's offense came from the top four spots in the order. Damianos went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Taylor had one hit and drove in a run. Callara and Scapperotti also scored runs from the top of the lineup as well.

It did not take long for the Bombers to get on the scoreboard, as three of the game's first four batters came around to score. Francesca Busa led off with a single and reached second after an error allowed Julianne Vincent to get on, and a Monica Capolongo double scored both runners to make it 2-0. Casey Gavin followed with an RBI double of her own as part of the four-run first.

The Valiant offense, meanwhile, was held in check by Allison Macari, who allowed only three walks over the first five innings of work. Manhattanville finally broke through in the sixth, as a walk to Callara and a Scapperotti single were followed by a two-run triple off the bat of Damianos. Taylor followed up with a run-scoring single of her own, but the squad managed no more hits the rest of the way.

Taylor (0-3) did not receive much help in suffering the loss, as only two of the six runs she allowed were earned over seven innings. Maceri allowed three runs on three hits in six innings before Laura Quicker came on for the seventh to earn the save.

After a day off tomorrow, Manhattanville (1-3) will be back for its third day at the Dot Richardson Spring Games on Tuesday, when the Valiants take on Meredith and Farmingdale State at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
