Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik) celebrated Senior Day by tossing her second no-hitter of the season and posting a pair of shutouts as the Manhattanville softball team completed the Freedom Conference regular-season schedule with a back-to-back 8-0 (5 inn.) victories over Eastern on Saturday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.
The two wins give Manhattanville (23-7) a 13-1 mark in the Freedom Conference this season, the first time a Freedom team has won 13 conference games in a season since King's (Pa.) in 2007. The Valiants have outscored their opponents 119-31 in conference play this season headed into the conference tournament.
The Valiants also move to an amazing 21-1 in their last 22 games and remain perfect at home this season, moving to 14-0 and outscoring their opponents by an incredible 119-11 margin in 81 innings.
Taylor (21-6) was dominant for Manhattanville in two wins, allowing four hits in game one and none in game two while striking out nine in 10 innings. Her two shutouts give her eight this season, setting a new school single-season record.
Meanwhile, the freshman trio of
Shelbee Damianos (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff),
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and
Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) wreaked havoc all day long against the Eagles, combining for four homers and 12 RBIs. Damianos had a perfect day, going 4 for 4 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored; Diemicke had two home runs and five runs batted in; while Deieso had a homer and four RBIs of her own.
The Valiants only needed one inning to get all the offense they needed in game one, scoring seven times in the second inning on the way to an 8-0 win in five innings.
The pivotal inning started with an infield single from Taylor and a walk from classmate
Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan), and both runners came home on a triple off the bat of Deieso. An RBI groundout by senior
Shauna Mulkerin (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) brought home a third run, but also emptied the bases with two outs.
The Valiants mounted a two-out rally to continue the scoring, notching four more runs before the frame was over. Junior
Rosaria Callara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) singled and stole second to restart the rally, and then came home on a single by Damianos. The big blow came next off the bat of Diemicke, as she launched the first long ball of her career, a three-run shot that made it a 7-0 game after two.
The one inning was more than enough for Taylor, who danced in and out of trouble all game long but still managed to post her seventh shutout of 2014. The senior stranded 11 Eagles on base over five innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the first, third and fourth frames, and allowed just four hits and struck out five. With the win, she became only the second pitcher in program history to record 20 wins in a season, joining three-time 20-game winner Maggie Thomas '07.
Manhattanville had no huge innings in game two, but scored at least once in each of the final four frames to end another game early with a second straight 8-0 victory.
As good as she was in tough moments in game one, Taylor was simply untouchable in game two against the Eagles, with her only blemish being a two-out walk to Melinda Kreimer in the second inning. She struck out four and needed only 52 pitches to take down Eastern for the second time.
The Valiants struck first in the second inning with a two-run, two-out homer from Deieso, as the freshman fouled off four straight pitches before sending a Haleigh Williams offering over the center-field fence. After another one-two-three inning for Taylor, the home team got three more in the third on a Damianos sacrifice fly and Diemicke's second homer of the day.
Callara made it a six-run lead in the fourth with an RBI single before Manhattanville ended the game early with two in the fifth, thanks to run-scoring singles by a pair of seniors, Taylor and
Emily Frawley (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains).
Manhattanville will close out the regular season tomorrow with a tough non-conference test, when the Valiants host regional power Western Connecticut State for two games at Manhattanville Field beginning at noon.
