Men's Lacrosse Victorious in Four-Overtime Marathon at Bard, 8-7

Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday in a thrilling 8-7 four-overtime victory over Bard on Wednesday night. After over 12 minutes of scoreless extra time, sophomore Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) notched the game-winning goal, his thirteenth of the season, 48 seconds into the fourth overtime in the longest game in program history.

Normandin had two goals for Manhattanville (1-11) in the win, while freshman Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) led all players with five points on three goals and two assists. Junior Cory Balog (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) and freshmen CJ Paniccia (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) and Connor Daly (Rockville Center, N.Y./South Side) also scored for the Valiants in the non-conference victory.

The game would never have reached overtime if not for some last-minute heroics by the Valiants. Down by a goal with less than 30 seconds left in regulation, Manhattanville earned a man-up opportunity and took advantage of its chance, as Normandin delivered his first dramatic tally of the night with just 13 seconds remaining to even the score at seven.

The first overtime featured 11 combined shots over the four-minute period, including nine attempts on the Valiant cage, but freshman Ian Reill (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) made two saves to keep the Valiants alive. Reill had three more stops over the next eight minutes of scoreless play before the Valiants earned the first possession of the fourth overtime and, after a timeout, Normandin emerged from behind the net and somehow managed to get a shot off that snuck its way past Bard keeper John Henry Glascock to finally end the game in Manhattanville's favor.

The 72:48 of game time made it the longest game in program history, besting the team's three-overtime loss to Castleston State way back on March 31, 1987. Manhattanville finished the game with a 47-39 edge in shots, while the Valiants also dominated at the faceoff X by winning 17 of 22 draws, including a stellar 13-of-15 mark from Polak.

In a game that was tightly contested the whole way, through the Valiants continuously responded to Bard's attempts to pull away. The first half was a tale of two midfielders as Murray and Bard's Henry Blosfelds scored all three goals of the first half for their respective sides.

After Blosfelds picked up the first goal of the game at the 13:33 mark of the first quarter, Murray tallied back with two goals at the 8:14 mark of the first quarter and 10:12 of the second quarter.  Trading punches like two heavyweight boxers, Blosfelds quickly tied the game back up with 8:29 remaining in the second, with Murray and the Valiants responding just 39 seconds later to regain the lead. Blosfeld, picking up his third goal of the game with 2:42 remaining in the half, sent the teams to halftime knotted at three.

The Valiants continued firing on all cylinders the second half as Paniccia scored his sixth goal of the season, giving the Valiants a 4-3 lead. Bard would respond however, scoring the next three goals with two of them coming from freshman attacker DJ Peters and the third coming off the stick of Matt Livermore with just 1:08 remaining the third quarter.

The Valiants' resiliency proved unwavering as the team responded time and time again throughout the fourth quarter. Trailing 6-4, Balog converted a man-up opportunity off an assist from Murray to get back within one. After Bard increased its lead to two on Livermore's second goal of the game with 6:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, Polak won the ensuing faceoff and Daly immediately broke down-field and sniped a shot past Glascock to bring the Valiants back to within one with 6:20 left to play, setting the stage for the thrilling finish.

Reill was solid in between the pipes recording 12 saves in the game, including five in overtime, to earn his first collegiate victory. Glascock was forced to make 21 saves to keep his team in the game.

Manhattanville will look to carry the momentum from Wednesday's win into the remainder of its Freedom Conference schedule, which starts back up on Saturday with a matchup against King's (Pa.) at GoValiants.com Field beginning at 1 p.m.
