Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – William Paterson freshman Gabrielle Castelli tossed a one-hit shutout as the Pioneers, ranked 24th in the latest NFCA Division III National Poll, defeated Manhattanville by a 2-0 score in game one of the Salisbury, Maryland Regional of the 2014 NCAA Division III Softball Championships, hosted by Salisbury University at the SU Softball Field on Friday.
William Paterson (30-9) advances to the winner's bracket of the regional and will play again tomorrow at 11 a.m., where they will take on the winner of today's second game between #4 Salisbury and Penn State-Berks. Manhattanville (27-9) will have to come out of the loser's bracket and will take on the Salisbury-PSU loser tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination contest.
The Valiants struggled all game long against Castelli (13-2), who allowed only a single by sophomore
Alyx Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) two batters into the game. The freshman scattered the one hit and struck out three in seven innings to pick up the win.
Senior
Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik) suffered the hard-luck loss for Manhattanville despite pitching an excellent game. Taylor (25-7) had her own personal 15-game winning streak snapped with the loss, despite allowing only three hits and one earned run in six innings.
It was a frustrating day offensively for the Valiants, who got only two baserunners on over the final six frames, both coming on walks to freshman
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge). Taylor matched Castelli zero for zero over the first three frames, thanks in part to a great running catch by junior
Rosaria Callara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) that ended the third after she crashed into the fence to grab the ball before the wall.
William Paterson got the first run of the game in the fourth inning, as a leadoff double by Kelsey Principe resulted in a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kelsey Wimmershoff, as she just beat Callara's throw to the plate.
The Pioneers again threatened in the fifth inning, getting the first two runners on base via an error and a hit batter. After a two-strike sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Taylor struck out pinch-hitter Danielle Capozzi but a wild pitch allowed Rachel Wasilak to score. The damage was limited, however, as an infield grounder cut down a run at the plate and a pop out ended the threat.
But that was more than enough for Castelli, as the Valiants could get nothing going all afternoon long.
