Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team dropped their third straight game on Saturday, falling to Marywood University by a final score of 4-2. While the Valiants had their fair-share of opportunities, it was Marywood's Daniel Hull who made the most of his opportunities on the pitch.
The wet weather did not slow down the offenses as the slick pitch helped to provide for some excitement on otherwise normally mild shots. In just the fourth minute of play, junior forward Daniel Hull was found on the back-end of a thru-ball, and making the most of his time and space, slotted the ball past junior goalkeeper
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and into the far left netting, giving the Pacers a 1-0 lead.
Manhattanville would respond with several good chances of their own, the best of which coming off the foot of sophomore
Dan Lorandini (Garden City Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) as his turn-around volley from 12 yards out skipped along the wet turf before striking the right post. Unlucky for Lorandini and the Valiants, the rebound was cleared before any damage could be done.
The Valiants continuously pushed the ball forward in an attempt to even the score. It was the same aggressiveness that ultimately led to a 2-0 deficit heading into halftime, as Justin Liu found Daniel Hull on another thru-ball and Hull, challenged only by Singson coming off his line, slid the ball past the left leg of the keeper.
Hull did not stop his badgering of the Valiants' backline in the second half. In the 55
th minute, after a give-and-go with fellow Pacer Daniel Lopez, Hull sent a sweeping cross into the box that was nodded in at the back post by freshman Dylan McMahon .
Despite the Pacers' best efforts, the Valiants were able to get on the scoreboard Saturday as sophomore
Jordan Daniel (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach), picking up his second goal of the season, headed home a cross from freshman
Jeffrey Carreira (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). The assist is the first of Carreira's Valiant career.
The Pacers increased the lead to 4-1 after Hull was brought down in the box, earning a penalty kick which was capitalized by Kris Kassel. The Valiants clawed back again with an unorthodox goal in the 80th minute that was finished by sophomore
Eddy Garcia (Frederick, Md./Urbana), scoring the first point of his Valiant career.
The score would remain 4-2 for the duration of the game.
Jordan Daniel (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) almost made it 4-3 with his impersonation of "The Hand of God", however, Diego Maradona pulled it off much better in the '86 World Cup when he scored the game-tying goal for Argentina against England. Instead of a goal, Daniel was awarded his second yellow card of the game and, subsequently, a red card.
The Valiants will next play at Rutgers-Newark, Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM.
