Box Score NEWARK, N.J. - The potent offense of Rutgers-Newark proved to be too much for the Valiants to handle on Wedensday night. Falling by a final score of 3-0, the Valiants were unable to generate any real scoring opportunities against the NSCAA regionally-ranked Scarlet Raiders, who are now on a six game winning streak after starting the season 0-2.
Coach
Gregg Miller's largest concern heading into the match was the height advantage that favored Rutgers-Newark as three Valiant starting midfielders are sidelined with injury.
It wasn't long into the match before Coach Miller's fears were validated. In just the 18th minute, Hubert Dui sent a cross into the box, heading it home was Charlie O'Connell, the 6'3" Scarlet Raiders forward. The goal was O'Connell's fifth of the season, and was the first of two headers that the forward put into the back of the net.
The Valiants were able to keep the game close and take a 1-0 deficit into halftime. The Valiants were able to stay in this game thanks in large part to junior goalkeeper
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who registered 10 saves on the night, his highest save total since an 11-save performance against Montclair State during his sophomore season.
It wasn't long after halftime that O'Connell increased the lead to two when, in the 57', he headed a cross from Diego Moraes into the far left-side netting. Just four minutes later, Singson made a nice save off a header but Dylan Elias gave Rutgers-Newark a 3-0 lead when he headed home the rebound.
The height advantage that Coach Miller feared could not have played a larger role. Despite their best efforts, the Valiants offense was held to just one shot on goal on the evening, which was turned away by Rutgers-Newark keeper, Matt Broomalll.
The Valiants return to GoValiants.com Field this Saturday to take on New York University at 2 p.m.
