Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team battled hard on Saturday and took down the previously undefeated NYU Violets by a final score of 1-0. Junior midfielder
Eddie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) picked up his second goal of the season, heading home a corner kick from sophomore
Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) in the 61st minute.
The two teams headed into Saturday's competition riding different streaks. The Valiants were looking to end their recent skid and, in hoping to do so, would have to take down a 6-0 NYU squad headlined by the reigning NSCAA Division III player of the week, freshman Nicolas Notaro.
Play began spiritedly as the two teams jostled for possession and opportunities. Although the chances weren't abundant, each team was able to apply some pressure in the attacking third and both keepers were sharp on their wits when it came time to make a save.
Coming out of halftime tied 0-0, the teams wasted no time in resuming the physicality and tenacity that saw tempers rise in the first half. After plenty of pushing and shoving, the Valiants earned a corner kick just over 60 minutes into the game.
While players got into position on the outside of the 18-yard box, Macchia sent a beautiful sweeping corner that floated to the top of the six-yard box before being headed home by the lengthy Silber. The goal is his second of the year; both have come in the second half and both have been on headers, but this is the first game-winning goal of the junior's Manhattanville career.
"[It] came about because of something we talked about at halftime on the corner kick," head coach
Gregg Miller said. "There was that space in the middle of that six-yard area and Eddie did a good job attacking that space and Macchia did a good job at putting the ball where he should."
The Violets would not go away easily, however. Hoping to preserve their undefeated record, they increased the intensity for the remaining 29 minutes and threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Valiants defense and junior goalkeeper
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's), who was perfect on the day recording four saves.
"You have to work for everything at [the college] level," said Miller. "I think today, for probably the first time since our first weekend of the season, we have actually earned the right to win a game. That's what you have to do at this level, you have to execute and you have to work hard and we did both things today."
The win gives Manhattanville a 3-4 record on the season. The Valiants will travel to Hoboken, N.J., on Wednesday to take on Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.
