Men's Basketball Comes Up Short as Valiants Drop Season Opener to Oneonta

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Manhattanville College Men's Basketball team opened up its 2015-16 season on the short end of a 77-69 defeat to SUNY Oneonta State on Saturday at the Lancaster Rotary F&M Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Franklin and Marshall College.

"We didn't play our game today and credit Oneonta for playing their game," stated head coach Pat Scanlon.

The Red Dragons opened up the game with an 11 point lead, but the Valiants clawed back and outscored Oneonta State 33-15 to head into halftime with a four point lead.

"We shook off a bad start and stayed together," continued Scanlon. "We played well for a nice stretch but could not sustain it for long."

Manhattanville (0-1) extended its lead all the way up to 10 before the Red Dragons responded with a 26-8 run to give Oneonta State (1-0) a 61-53 lead toward the end of the game.

The Valiants cut the lead to three after an Andrew Winter (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) three-pointer with 33 seconds remaining. On the next possession Winter stole the ball and missed the potential game-tying three-pointer and the Red Dragons made their free throws down the stretch to come up with the eight point victory.

Oneonta State shot over 50 percent from the field while the Valiants shot a modest 42 percent. Most of the statistics were even except second chance points and rebounds. The Red Dragons outscored Manhattanville 22-0 in second chance points and outrebounded the Valiants 45-26.

Senior Mikey McElroy led the Red Dragons with a double-double (16 points and 15 rebounds). Senior Jackson Zuvic added 13 and junior Lawrence Coleman netted 11 in the win. Oneonta State will take on Franklin and Marshall College who defeated Elizabethtown College 80-49 in the night cap.

For Manhattanville, senior Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) led the Valiants with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow classmate Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) scored 17 points and grabbed four boards. Winter tacked on nine points and sophomore Alex Tuci (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) recorded eight points.

The Valiants will face Elizabethtown on Sunday in the consolation of the Lancaster Rotary F&M Tip-Off Tournament at 2 p.m.

"We need to come out tomorrow and play a more consistent game in all phases," concluded Scanlon.
