Women's Lacrosse Preview: No. 4 Manhattanville College vs No. 5 Saint Joseph's University (Long Island) | Skyline Conference Championship First Round | Tuesday, 7 p.m. | Live Stats | Video
How We Got Here:
The first round matchup came to fruition mainly as a result of the meeting these two teams had last week in the final week of the regular season. The winner of the April 27 matchup secured a first round home game for the tournament, and the contest did not disappoint with those stakes.
The Valiants trailed by seven late in the third quarter, but Manhattanville pulled off an incredible comeback to ultimately win the game 15-13. Manhattanville then closed out the season with a 16-12 win at Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, entering the postseason with a 4-3 conference mark and winners of four straight games.
The Crimson and White have used four scorers this season that have racked up 30 or more points to generate their offense. The tandem of
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) and
Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) enter Tuesday night as the team's leaders in points with 38 each. Carr was integral in the comeback win over the Golden Eagles last week, scoring six times. Her 27 goals on the year ranks second amongst the Valiants. Kelly, meanwhile, has scored 25 goals and dished out 13 assists. She has capitalized on free position shots, leading the team with 10 on the year.
Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) leads the Valiants in goals with 32, while
Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) has earned 32 points on 26 goals and six assists on the year.
Defensively, Manhattanville's
Kasey Molito (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional) ranks third in the Skyline with 2.62 caused turnovers per game. Kelly is right behind her, averaging 2.54 caused turnovers per contest. In net, Britney Siroata has made 118 saves on the year.
The Golden Eagles have not been in action since the April 27 loss to Manhattanville. Saint Joseph's features one of the conference's best netminders in Jillian Hummel, who leads the Skyline in save percentage (.559) and ranks second in saves per game (12.09). On the attack, the Golden Eagles are led by Melissa Newman and Jamie Trowbridge have combined for 75 total points, scoring 60 goals between the two of them. The Valiants got to see the duo work up close last week, as Newman and Trowbridge scored nine of the Golden Eagles' 13 goals.
