Men’s Tennis Struggles in 6-1 Loss to Baruch

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University men's tennis team competed against Baruch College today at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. The squad was faced with some tough opponents as the Valiants took a 6-1 loss. Their record now sits at 2-3 overall while conference play still awaits.

Manhattanville was pegged down in all the doubles matches giving the Bearcats the first point of the contest. Benjamin Krieger and Nathan Oie won by default on the third court with the limited squad from the Valiants. A new doubles pairing took the No. 1 court this afternoon as Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) and Lev Uitterhoeve (Maastricht, The Netherlands/Porta Mosana College) were taken down by Juan Mendoza and Juan Paredes, 6-4. Mario Alcala (Madrid, Spain/Hoosac School) and John Curtin (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) were faced with a tougher match as they were subdued by Tuna Nergizoglu and Liam Cooper on the No. 2 flight.

Opening singles play with the five-member squad, the Valiants took the sixth court loss with no available player. Curtin finished his match first on the No. 4 court competing against Geroge Arteaga. Arteaga shutdown Curtin 6-0, 6-0. Guzman followed closely behind on the No. 1 court with the same reflected score of 6-0, 6-0 against Mendoza. Heading into the third match of singles play, Baruch led the contest 3-0. Alcala finished next for Manhattanville earning a game in each set before being taken down by Paredes. Dylan Von Brook (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) was stationed on the No. 5 court where he faced off against Enoch Zheng. Von Brook rallied to take three games from Zheng in the first set and one game in the second, but it was ultimately not enough as he was outlasted 6-3, 6-1. The final Valiant of the day went into a tiebreaker for the final match of the contest. Uitterhoeve was responsible for the only point Manhattanville won. Winning the first set 7-5 and losing the following set 6-4 led the match into a tiebreaker. Going point-for-point would stretch the final numbers to 14-12 in favor of Uitterhoeve. With these results, Manhattanville was overpowered by the Bearcats, 6-1.
