BRONX, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University men's tennis team locked up a dominant final non-conference win over Lehman College this afternoon. With two final conference matchups to be played in the regular season, the Valiants land at 5-8 overall while the Lehman falls to 1-9.
Diving into the match, Lev Uitterhoeve (Maastricht, The Netherlands/Porta Mosana College) and Mario Alcala (Madrid, Spain/Hoosac School) teamed up to take residency on the No. 1 court. The duo kicked off the contest defeating Juan Rodriguez and Hashir Rezul, 6-0. Despite not being able to field a third doubles court, the Valiants earned the first point of the match with Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) and Dylan Von Brook (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) playing on the No. 2 court. The pair locked down the first point defeating Fernanda Navarette and Taishawn Brownlee, 6-1.
Leham brought immediate balance to the competition with no sixth member of the Valiant team able to compete in No. 6 singles. Uitterhoeve unfolded his match on the No. 1 flight quickly clinching a win over Richie Magaribi 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets and games. Alcala finished next placing Manhattanville in a 3-1 lead defeating Rezui 6-1, 6-0 on the No. 3 court. Guzman showcased an identical score to his Underclassmen defeating Rodriguez in straight sets and games 6-0, 6-0. With only two more matches remaining, John Curtin (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) finished next for the Valiants taking down Jaden Young 6-2, 6-2. Von Brook took part in the most taxing match of the evening, taking the second set to a tiebreaker. He won the first set 6-1 and found himself playing tag in the next set as he defeated Brownlee in a 7-4 tie-breaking second set.
