MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Three Valiants hit better than .500 on the night, led by the .571 hitting of junior Ally Johnson (Branford, Conn.), as the Manhattanville women's volleyball team won its 10th game of the season with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-20) non-conference victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth on Friday night at St. Joseph's Hall.
For Manhattanville, the victory moves the team into double digits in victories for the first time in nine years, since the 2001 team posted a 13-8 record.
The Valiants as a team registered a team hitting percentage of .300 for the evening, as the team recorded 29 kills and 11 errors on just 60 attacks for its second-highest percentage of the season. Junior Damaris Morales (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) led the team with nine kills and no errors (.562 hitting), while Johnson had four kills without an error for a match- and career-best .571 percentage. Fellow junior Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii) also hit an even .500 for the match, registering three kills to go with 14 assists and four service aces.
With four kills on the night, Johnson became the fifth Manhattanville player to reach the 100-kill plateau for the season, marking the first time in program history in which more than four players had at least 100 kills in the same season. Junior Maggie Black (Seattle, Wash.) also moved to with three kills of 100 on the year as well, as each member of the Valiant roster closes in on triple digits for the season.
Freshman Jocelyn Branca (Eastchester, N.Y.) added seven kills and seven service aces, the most aces by a Valiant this season, while classmate Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) had five of her own as the well-balanced Valiant attack took down the Screaming Eagles in straight sets.
Manhattanville was consistently strong over the course of the match, as the team did not register a hitting percentage of less than .238 in any set. The team came out strong in the first frame with 10 kills and .316 hitting, then hit .238 in the second set and closed out the evening by making just three errors with 10 kills in a .350 final set.
Manhattanville (10-17, 0-7 Freedom) will begin its final weekend of the season tomorrow, when the Valiants take part in day one of the Hunter College Tournament. The day starts at 11 a.m. against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, followed by a 1 p.m. match versus Ramapo College. Saint Elizabeth completes its 2010 season with a 1-26 (0-8 NEAC) record.
