PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its 2010-11 dual match schedule on Wednesday afternoon, suffering a 7-0 defeat to Kean University in a non-conference match at the Manhattanville Courts. Two of the matches were suspended due to darkness and not completed.
Four Cougars were double winners on the day, as senior Annie Ramos, sophomore Lauren Petrucelli, and freshmen Debra Dress and Jaelynn Lee all picked up a pair of wins for the visitors on the afternoon.
Manhattanville came up just a little short in doubles play, dropping a pair of 8-6 decisions at the top two flights to put the team behind the eight-ball early. At first doubles, sophomore Nell Kucich (Manhasset, N.Y.) and senior Kaitlin Triano (Rye, N.Y.) came up one break short against Dress and senior Lisette LaForge, while at second doubles it was junior Bo Siek (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) and freshman Laura Fortunato (Providence, R.I.) falling by the same score to Petrucelli and Lee.
The Valiants continued to battle in singles play, but could not prevent the Kean shutout. Junior Gliceida Galarza (Santiago, Dominican Republic) nearly took the first set of her sixth-singles matchup with Ramos, but fell by a 9-7 score in the tiebreaker and then dropped the second set, 6-2. Siek also came up just a few games short versus Dress at third singles, falling by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
A pair of singles matches did not finish due to darkness. Triano took her first set to a tiebreaker before falling, 7-5, but had come back to go up by a break in the second set (3-1) before darkness fell and halted the match the third-singles contest in its place. Kucich and LaForge at first singles also did not have time to finish with LaForge leading, 6-3, 4-3.
“We weren't at our best today and again we fell just short in doubles,” head coach David Slater said. “We played a good Kean team that was just a little bit sharper than us in all aspects of the game. Neither team had been able to play much in the week leading up the match because of the recent weather, but Kean was able to adapt quicker than we were and it showed that we still have some work to do. It was a tough day but there are plenty of positives for us to focus on leading into the individual conference tournament.”
Manhattanville (1-2, 0-0 Freedom) will make its final appearance of the fall season next weekend, as the Valiants will compete on their own at the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships on October 9-10 at Kirby Park in Edwardsville, Pa.
