GENEVA, N.Y. – Sophomore Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa.) finished with three points in the contest, including the game-winning goal in the 55th minute, to give the Manhattanville field hockey team its second victory of the season with a 4-3 win over St. Lawrence on Day Two of the William Smith Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Three other Valiants scored in the contest, including freshman Alyssa Tourdot (Blue Bell, Pa.), scoring her first collegiate goal in the first half. The Valiants played a smart first half leading to eight shots (four on target) and took a 2-1 lead after 35 minutes. The designated visiting team got on the board off a penalty corner taken by Meenan in the 20th minute, as the sophomore's cross came to the stick on senior Jen Ascencio (Monroe, N.Y.) who set-up junior Colleen Macedo (Norwalk, Conn.) for her first goal of the year with a blast from the top of the circle.
The Valiants added to their lead in the 33rd minute, as a scramble in front of the net allowed sophomore Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y.) to find Tourdot to dunk the shot behind Saints' netminder Nicole Matos. However, the Saints responded 19 seconds later with their first tally of the contest as a cross pass from Taylor Vogt found Erika Swits with her first goal.
In the second half, the Valiants took advantage of a rebound with freshman Megan Greene (North Kingstown, R.I.) driving home a loose ball for her third goal of the season in the 52nd minute to up the lead to 3-1. Three minutes later, the Valiants added their final goal of the contest with Meenan's shot bypassing Matos, who came out of the net allowing the ball to trickle over the line for a 4-1 Mville edge.
The Saints did not go home without a fight, with Swits adding her second goal of the contest from Brooke Maloney in the 57th minute and then Vogt making it a one-goal game in the 64th minute.
St. Lawrence outshot the Valiants 17-5 in the second half and finished with a 21-13 margin in shots over 70 minutes. The Valiants had a 10-5 edge in penalty corners and were successful with their first goal coming from the set piece.
Goaltending was the story of the contest once again for Manhattanville as freshman Melissa Grant (Hampton, N.H.) picked up her first collegiate victory, making 12 saves with 10 coming in the second half. Matos made six saves on 10 attempts and was dealt her first defeat of the season.
