PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville field hockey team defeated the DeSales Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon by the score of 3-0 at GoValiants.com Field in a Freedom Conference matchup that was a make-up after yesterday's postponement in Purchase, N.Y.
Manhattanville dominated the first half in terms of shots at a 17-2 margin, seven of which were taken by sophomore Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley). On her fourth shot of the half, she gave Manhattanville a 1-0 lead at the 16:05 mark of the first half after receiving a pass by the near post from senior Alyssa Coughlan (Rye, N.Y./Rye).
After the halftime break, Manhattanville started out of the gates quickly with two shots in the first minute by DeChent and Coughlan, both of which were stopped by DeSales goalkeeper Victoria DelToro.
DeSales had their best stretch of the half when they were able to earn back-to-back penalty corners, which culminated in a shot that was stopped defensively by senior Colleen Macedo (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon).
Manhattanville returned the favor with a bevy of chances of their own as both junior Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and sophomore Alyssa Tourdot (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) had their shots stopped by DelToro. A few moments later DeChent took a backwards shot that bounced off the right post.
About five minutes after hitting the post and a near opportunity to take the 2-0 lead, the Valiants finally broke through after junior Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) scored off a rebound for the unassisted goal. Just over a minute later senior Alyssa Nardone (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Regional Demarest) opened up the lead to three off of a pass from DeChent.
The Valiants allowed the final 11:24 wind off the clock as they collected their tenth win of the season. Also collecting her tenth win was sophomore goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)), who made four saves and collected the shutout. The loss is credited to DelToro, who allowed the three goals while making 12 saves.
In terms of shots the Valiants were well in the lead at a 27-10 margin, while shots on goal were also in favor of Manhattanville, 15-5. Penalty corners in the contest were even at eight each during the contest.
