PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team made quick work of Sarah Lawrence on Friday night at Kennedy Gymnasium, as the Valiants used an efficient offensive attack and capitalized on a multitude of SLC errors to earn a 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-14) non-conference victory over the Gryphons.
Prior to the match, Manhattanville retired the #4 jersey of former Valiant women's volleyball player Marissa Pagli, as the team's four seniors – the only remaining players to have played with Marissa during her season with the program – raised the jersey of their former teammate to the Kennedy Gym rafters. After the emotional pregame ceremony, the Valiants took to the court and quickly took care of business against the Gryphons.
No individual stood out offensively in the win, as no player had more than seven kills and every player that took at least five swings had at least three kills. Sophomore Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) had a team-high seven kills on 14 attacks, followed by seniors Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani), Ally Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Damaris Morales (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic/Colegio San Jose) all with five apiece. Senior Maggie Black (Seattle, Wash./The Center School) and freshman Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) added three each as well.
Defensively, freshman Sam Delmer (Boise, Idaho/Eagle) had nearly half of the Valiants' digs on the night, recording 16 of the team's 39.
Manhattanville also excelled from the service line, recording 16 service aces as a team. Morales had a match-high five aces for the home team, followed by Gomes with four and Johnson with three.
The Valiants came out swinging in the first set, hitting .400 as a team and putting away 10 of their 20 attempts. Nine of the team's first 15 points of the match came via kill, and then it was a parade of aces to conclude the set, as Gomes served three in a row before Black put down a kill and Morales served five straight aces to end the frame.
The aces dried up somewhat in the second set, and yet the Valiants still took the set with relative ease to go up by a pair. After the frame started with the teams splitting the first 10 points, Manhattanville got a Sarah Lawrence error and a Camaj kill to regain the lead, and the home team never relinquished it thanks to a late 9-2 run.
Manhattanville returned to form offensively in the third stanza, recording 11 kills and just three errors on 29 attempts to close out the match. Morales and Camaj had four kills each in the final frame, as the Valiants jumped out to a 10-4 lead and cruised the rest of the way.
For the match, Manhattanville had 29 kills and hit .253 as a team, while Sarah Lawrence was held to 12 kills and 15 errors (-.045 hitting).
Manhattanville (14-12) will complete Senior Week and also honor the team's four seniors tomorrow afternoon, as the Valiants host Senior Day and take on Bard in a non-conference matchup beginning at 1 p.m. at Kennedy Gym. Sarah Lawrence (2-17) will host Albertus Magnus on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
