PURCHASE, N.Y. –
The Manhattanville women's volleyball team dropped a second straight match on Wednesday night, falling to Mount Saint Mary by a 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 13-25, 25-16) score in a non-conference meeting at Kennedy Gymnasium.

Senior Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani) had the lone double-double on the Manhattanville side, leading the team with 15 assists and adding 12 digs. With her 12 digs, Gomes became the fourth player in program history – and first since 1998 – to reach 1,000 career digs and is the only Valiant ever to reach quadruple figures in more than one category (1,113 assists, third all-time). The senior is also three kills away from becoming the eighth Valiant to reach 500 for a career.

Freshman Sam Delmer (Boise, Idaho/Eagle) nearly reached double figures in two categories, pacing all players with 19 digs and also recording nine kills on a match-high 40 attempts. Senior Ally Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) added seven kills and 10 digs as well for the home team.

Mary Ann Raftery and Taylor Woegens combined to do a lot of the damage offensively for the Knights, as Raftery led all players with a match-high 13 kills on .321 hitting while Woegens had nine kills without an error for a match-best .346 hitting percentage. Raftery also had 14 digs for the team's only double-double, while Heather Schaeffer posted a team-high 18 digs as well.

Neither team was particularly sharp in the opening set, as Mount Saint Mary had eight kills and six errors while Manhattanville had eight kills countered by eight misfires. The major problem for the Valiants in the opener was a lack of momentum – the home team did not put together more than one point in a row from 4-all until the 22-15 mark.

The second set started off evenly, as the score was tied at nine after a service error by Woegens. But the Knights used three kills each from Raftery and Katherine Tischer to go on an 11-2 run and open up a 20-11 lead. In the frame, MSM hit .256 with 14 kills and four errors, while the Valiants managed just six kills.

Manhattanville finally put things together in the third set to stay alive, as the home team scored the first four points and never looked back in a 25-13 win. The Valiants cut down on their errors (four) drastically during the frame, while forcing the Knights into 14 errors and only five kills.

But Mount Saint Mary rebounded in the fourth and final set, putting down 14 kills with only two errors to close out the match. The visitors again used a late rush to put away the Valiants, as with the set tied at eight the Knights scored 12 of the next 14 points to build an insurmountable advantage.

Manhattanville (9-9) will look to get back on the winning track and get back above .500 on Saturday at the Saint Elizabeth Tri-Match, beginning with an 11 a.m. meeting with the host Eagles followed by a 1 p.m. matchup with Rosemont. Mount Saint Mary (8-9) will take on Farmingdale State and SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday.
