MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville men's tennis team finished up its Freedom Conference regular-season schedule in encouraging fashion on Wednesday afternoon at the FDU Tennis Courts, as the Valiants bested conference foe FDU-Florham by a 9-0 score.
For the most part, it was an easy day on the courts for the Valiants against the Devils, as all singles matches were won in straight sets and the visitors dropped just six total games in doubles play.
All six Valiants were double winners on the afternoon, led by freshman Gabriel Pinto (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Internacional SEK-Ecuador), who did not lose a game in either match. At fourth singles, he put a double bagel on Dave Thiagaram, 6-0, 6-0, and that came after he and junior Michael Capozzi (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/San Judas Tadeo) defeated Kevin Ly and Kevin Kotsak by an 8-0 score. Capozzi also had an easy singles win at the top flight, 6-0, 6-3 over AJ Warden.
At the bottom of the lineup, sophomore Andres Rivera and senior Chris Lin (White Plains, N.Y./Eastchester) both also had a pair of workmanlike wins. The pair started their day with an 8-2 win over Ryan Kearns and Thiagaram. Rivera followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Danny Aviles at fifth singles, while Lin needed one fewer game to beat Brian Rifici, 6-1, 6-0.
Junior Dean Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) continued the Valiant run with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ly at second singles after he and sophomore Karim Mahmoud (Cairo, Egypt/Nefertari American International School) had an 8-4 win over Warden and Rifici. Mahmoud had by far the toughest match of the day, as he needed a pair of tiebreakers to defeat Kotsak at third singles, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) and complete the sweep.
Manhattanville (8-4, 4-1 Freedom) has one more tune-up before the Freedom Conference Tournament, coming on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Baruch College. FDU-Florham has its season come to a close with a 4-11 (1-4 Freedom) mark.
