MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville women's tennis team put forth an effort worthy of its team nickname on Thursday afternoon at the FDU Tennis Courts, but the Valiants were unable to overcome the forfeiture of two matches in suffering a tough 5-4 loss to FDU-Florham in the team's 2010-11 season finale.
Without the services of their first singles player and one-half of their first-doubles tandem, freshman Laura Fortunato (Providence, R.I./Classical), the Valiants went into Thursday's match knowing that they started off down 2-0. With a reshuffled lineup, the visitors actually won four of the seven matches contested on the afternoon; however, it was not enough to overcome that early deficit.
Especially strong for the Valiants on Thursday was senior Kaitlin Triano (Rye, N.Y./Rye), who was a dual winner in her final collegiate match. The senior teamed with sophomore Bo Siek (Phnom Penh, Cambodia/Wissahickon (Pa.)) for an 8-4 win over Adrianne Nenow and Megan Scherer at first doubles, then stormed back from a set down to defeat Scherer again at second singles, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
Juniors Kim Kunces (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Gliceida Galarza (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Leonardo da Vinci) also earned singles victories as well for Manhattanville, coming at the fourth and fifth flights. Making her first appearance at fourth singles, Kunces dispatched Marcie Schlanger by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Galarza also earned her first win of the season at fifth singles, besting Jennifer Epstein by a 6-3, 6-2 score.
Manhattanville (1-12, 0-5 Freedom) has its 2010-11 season come to a close with the loss. FDU-Florham (1-6, 1-4 Freedom) will continue non-conference play on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against the College of Saint Elizabeth.
