PURCHASE, N.Y. – Behind another strong doubles performance and more solid play on the singles courts, the Manhattanville men's tennis team won its second straight Freedom Conference matchup with a tidy 8-1 victory over King's (Pa.) College on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Manhattanville Courts.
The Valiants made quick work of the Monarchs on the day, as no doubles team lost more than three games and only one singles match went past a second set. As a result, five Valiants won both of the their matches.
Sophomore Andres Rivera and junior Dean Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) set the tone for the day with an 8-0 victory at second doubles over Mike Steinberger and Chris DiMino, followed closely behind by senior Chris Lin (White Plains, N.Y./Eastchester) and sophomore Karim Mahmoud (Cairo, Egypt/Nefertari American International School) at third doubles with an 8-1 triumph over Matt Grassi and P.T. Romano. Junior Michael Capozzi (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/San Judas Tadeo) and freshman Gabriel Pinto (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Internacional SEK-Ecuador) completed the doubles sweep, defeating Tony Bevevino and Tim Carroll, 8-3, at the top flight.
Singles play did not offer much resistance either for the Valiants, as Capozzi, Mahmoud and Pinto all won their respective matches by the same 6-2, 6-1 score,. Capozzi took down Carroll at first singles, while Mahmoud earned a third-singles win over Steinberger and Pinto defeated Nick Conte at fourth singles.
In addition, Tahir bested Bevevino, 6-4, 6-4, at second singles, while Rivera was the lone Valiant to need a supertiebreaker to pick up win, coming back from a set down to defeat Jake Rorhing, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-5).
Manhattanville (6-2, 2-0 Freedom) will return to the courts tomorrow afternoon, as the Valiants take on New York University in a non-conference contest starting at noon.
