GENEVA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville Valiants field hockey team got back in the win column on Sunday after taking down St. Lawrence 2-1 in day two of the William Smith Classic.
The Valiants pulled the trigger on the first two shots of the afternoon as junior Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and sophomore Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) each got shots off within the first five minutes. For DeChent it was the first of a six shot afternoon, leading the Valiants.
The Saints broke through for the first goal of the game off of a penalty corner taken by Erika Switts, the goal was scored as Julia Croyle lifted one over sophomore Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) at the 8:11 mark to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Just over six minutes later Manhattanville tied the game as sophomore Alyssa Tourdot (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) scored her second goal of the season off of a pass from DeChent from the left wing.
Each team had one more scoring chance in the first half as Britney Themistocles (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) hit the post 23:34 into the game. St. Lawrence's chance came when Kate Higgins took a shot that was stopped by sophomore defender Meg Wittner (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna). The two squads headed into the break tied at one.
After the intermission St. Lawrence got the first shot 2:10 into the half that was stopped by Hilton. From that point the Valiants exploded for ten consecutive shots including four by senior Alyssa Coughlan (Rye, N.Y./Rye).
On the tenth shot the Valiants took their first lead of the game when Megan Greene (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Meenan at the 45:32 mark of the game for the 2-1 advantage.
Within a 10 second spand, DeChent had another two opportunities score after her first shot was blocked, she regained her own rebound and shot the ball wide. St. Lawrence got three more shots on goal, all handled by Hilton as she finished the day with seven saves to earn her fourth win of the year.
Junior Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) had another solid game from her monster-back position helping the Valiant squad both offensively and defensively.
Manhattanville (4-1) will be back in action and play their first game at GoValiants.com Field this season on Wednesday when they take on Eastern Connecticut State at 4:30 p.m. St. Lawrence (3-3) will host the University of Rochester on Friday at 4 p.m.
