Manhattanville Swept by Wilkes on the Road

Junior Susy Camaj had a team-leading 11 kills to move into second on the single-season list.
Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team suffered a tough 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-10) loss to host Wilkes in a Freedom Conference matchup at the Marts Center on Tuesday night.

Manhattanville (8-21, 1-5 Freedom) is officially eliminated from postseason contention with the loss, while Wilkes (8-14, 3-3 Freedom) moves into a tie for third place in the conference standings with one match remaining for both teams.

Junior Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) led the Valiants with 11 kills on the night, in the process moving all the way up to second on the school's single-season kills list (242) and putting her just 17 away from setting a new school single-season record. In addition, freshman Patricia Alfonso (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertoriqueno de Ninas) had five kills to give her 200 for the year, making Camaj and Alfonso only the fifth pair of Valiant teammates (and first since 2001) to record 200 kills in the same season.

Camaj also tied with sophomore Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) for the team lead with 11 digs, giving her the match's only double-double.

For Wilkes, Casey Bohan led all players with 16 kills, followed by Paige Trusty with nine kills and Megan Powers with six kills and 31 assists.

The Colonels hit .304 on the night, recording 46 kills and 11 errors, while the Valiants hit .072 with 20 kills and 14 errors.

After Wilkes took the first frame quickly, the second set featured mini-runs by both teams to keep the action close; however, the Colonels scored eight of the final 10 points of the set to earn the two-set lead. Manhattanville actually posted a much higher hitting percentage in the frame, recording 12 kills with four errors, but the late Wilkes run was enough for the win.

In the final set, Wilkes used an early 11-1 run to take control of the frame and the Valiants could not score more than three consecutive points before the home team closed out the match with five straight points. Wilkes finished the match with 19 kills and two errors in the third set, while the Valiants had four kills and four errors.

The Valiants will conclude the season with three straight matches in front of the Kennedy Gym crowd, beginning on Saturday with a non-conference meeting with Lehman at 1 p.m. The live GoValiants.TV video broadcast will begin at 12:55 p.m.
