Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior
Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) posted a career-high 18 kills to set a new school single-season kills record and lead the Manhattanville women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-19) victory over Lehman in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gymnasium.
Camaj had an excellent afternoon for the Valiants, as her 260 kills so far this year surpass the school single-season mark of 258 set by Rebecca Magnuson '02 in 2001. The junior also added 14 digs, two assists and an ace in the victory. Eight of her kills came in the fourth set alone, as the Valiants were able to close out the Lightning and secure the win.
Freshman
Patricia Alfonso (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertoriqueno de Ninas) also had a big day, hitting .306 with 15 kills and adding 15 digs and two aces. Another double-double went to sophomore
Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne), who posted a match-high 34 assists and added 10 digs, three kills, an ace and a block.
For Lehman, Cari English was huge with 11 kills and five blocks, while Jo-Marie Aquino added 10 kills and 15 digs for her team's only double-double.
Manhattanville excelled offensively as a team, posting 52 kills and a .216 hitting percentage to go with seven aces and four team blocks. Lehman also was solid at the net with eight total blocks, but managed only 38 kills and .138 hitting.
After the two teams split the first two sets by the same 25-20 score, the third set was the easiest of the match for Manhattanville, as Lehman registered only four kills and eight errors in the frame. The Valiants had an 8-5 lead early in the frame before the home team used a 7-1 run on the serves of sophomores Ferreiras and
Mirusha Mujaj (Bronx, N.Y./Yorktown) to jump out to a 15-6 lead and take control of the match.
The Valiants were superb offensively in the fourth set, getting 19 of their 25 points via the kill and hitting .357 as a team on the way to ending the match. Camaj and Alfonso were particularly effective for the home team, as Camaj posted eight kills with only one error and Alfonso put down six kills without an error and also added an ace. The Valiants led the frame by just one at 19-18 before freshman
Jillian Chittenden (Rye, N.Y./Rye) got serve back with a kill, and four straight kills – three by Camaj and one by Mujaj – helped to close out the contest.
Manhattanville (9-21) will continue its season-ending three-match homestand on Wednesday night, as the Valiants close out Freedom Conference play against Misericordia beginning at 7 p.m. at Kennedy Gym.
