Box Score YORK, Pa. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team ended their 2012 non-conference schedule in a 3-0 loss to the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans on Wednesday afternoon. In goal freshman
Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) made six saves in defeat.
The Spartans controlled much of the game in the early going, outshooting Manhattanville 3-1 in the first 27 minutes of action. On the third York shot Antonio Bua put one past Silber after receiving a long pass into the slot from Ryan Donahue. The home team took its 1-0 lead all the way to the final minute of the first half before scoring their second goal of the game at the 44:07 mark, then took its 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
After halftime the Spartans picked up the first three corners of the half, as well as the first pair of shots. After a scrum formed in front of Silber's net the loose ball was struck by Cody Pearson, who shot the ball from the left side of the net to just inside the right post to put York up by a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Manhattanville was held off the board in terms of both goals, as well as shots as they finished the contest with just two in 90 minutes of play. York finished the game with 21 shots, including nine on goal, and also led in terms of corner kicks by a 8-0 differential.
Silber took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season, while on the other end of the field Jesse Derksen earned the win to improve to 11-2-2 on the year while making one save on the afternoon. Two other goalkeepers finished off 24:43 of the contest, as both Brad Schmidt and Steve Handy were not forced to make a save in either stint on the field.
“We played well for long stages of the game but let ourselves down with our tactical discipline,” said head men's soccer coach
Gregg Miller after the game. “It was good that a lot of the younger guys got significant minutes against a good team, which gives them some good experience for the future.”
“I also give a lot of credit to the referee for keeping good control and flow to the game,” Miller added.
“Overall we acquitted ourselves quite well against a team that should be competing for a national championship at the end of the season… and now we have to prepare ourselves for a huge game on Saturday against Misericordia.”
Manhattanville (7-6-4, 4-1-1 Freedom) will wrap-up the regular season in the Freedom Conference finale on Saturday afternoon when it hosts the Misericordia Cougars in a battle for the top seed in the Freedom Conference Championship beginning at approximately 3:30 p.m. this weekend.
