Women's Basketball Rolls to 25-Point Victory Over Neumann

Taylor Wilson, Ashley Raaf and Bri Pabon led Manhattanville on Monday evening with 60 of the team's 81 points.
Box Score ASTON, Pa. – The Manhattanville women's basketball team defeated the Neumann Knights by an 81-56 score on Monday evening from the Mirenda Center in Aston, Pa. Senior Taylor Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) had 27 points, while sophomore Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) had a career-high 19 points and freshman Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) added her career-best with 14 points

Wilson and sophomore Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) crashed the glass, and each picked up nine boards apiece to lead the team.

The Valiants started the game 0-for-2 from the free throw line, but Wilson grabbed the offensive rebound and sent home a three pointer to put Manhattanville up 3-0. Neumann scored two quick baskets to take their first lead of the game, just before sophomore Shayna Robinson (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) sent home a bank shot to regain an edge for Manhattanville.

The Valiants forced a pair of turnovers and Wilson as well as Pabon notched quick layups to put the Valiants up 9-4 with 17:18 to go in the opening period. Caiazzo and Robinson put Manhattanville on a brief 4-0 run, but it was broken up by a jumper from Johanna Metzger of Neumann to make the score 13-10.

Raaf got in on the scoring action hitting a deep three pointer from outside the right elbow and gave Manhattanville its biggest of six points in the early going. Neumann answered back with four straight points, which resulted in Manhattanville calling a full timeout.

After the timeout the Valiants rattled off an 11-0 run, it started with Raaf hitting a floater followed by Pabon getting a long two-pointer from the top of the arc. Wilson and Raaf hit back-to-back shots, before Wilson hit a three pointer to push the lead to 27-14. Pabon also sank a floater in the lane to cap off the run with 7:27 to go in the first half.

Later in the half, Robinson put up a jumper from the top of the key and hit it to keep Manhattanville's hot start going. A few possessions later, Wilson faked a three-point shot and hit a layup underneath while drawing a foul and completing the three-point play to put Manhattanville up 34-19.

The Valiants closed out the half of a 9-3 run to take a 43-26 lead into the halftime break, Wilson led the charge during the stretch with six points and also picked up an assist on the run. Wilson finished the half with 18 points, as Manhattanville had its largest halftime lead of the season at 17 points.

In the second half, Pabon started off the period with two quick baskets. A few possessions later, Wilson hit another three-pointer after taking a swift pass from freshman Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) to put Manhattanville up by 20 at 50-30. Franklin got in on the scoring action herself after taking a pass from Wilson as the lead continued to grow for the Valiants.

After the quick start, both teams struggled in the next several minutes of the second half, but Wilson ended the drought after putting up both ends of a 1-and-1 opportunity. After a Neumann basket, Wilson put up another three with the rebound falling right to Caiazzo, whose put-back was good.

As play continued, Pabon hit a long two-point basket from the left elbow, followed by a steak and quick layup by Raaf to give the Valiants a commanding 61-36 lead. Manhattanville forged forward and continued to hold onto a 25-point lead as junior Breana Jackson (Los Angeles, Calif./Crossroads School) hit a layup to bump the lead to 72-47.

Raaf came on late again as she hit a jumper from left corner, and a few possessions later hit nothing but net on a mid-range jumper from the right wing for Manhattanville's 80th point of the night. The game closed out with Raaf hitting one of two from the charity stripe to give Manhattanville their final point of the evening, in its 81-56 win.

As a team, Manhattanville took advantage of Neumann's 21 turnovers with 20 points off the takeaways. The Valiants also got 20 points from its four reserve players off the bench. The team finished the game with a 49.3% from the floor and also 4-for-10 from the land of the three.

Manhattanville (6-3) will play one final game in 2012 on Thursday when the Valiants travel to Madison, N.J. for a date with the Drew Rangers at 2:00 p.m. Neumann (2-6) will host the Rowan Profs on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. before heading into the 2013 calendar year.
