FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's tennis team took advantage of a shorthanded Hunter squad to snap its five-match losing streak with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Hawks in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.

Manhattanville won one doubles and two singles matches over the course of the day, but also received help from Hunter as the Hawks could not field a sixth-singles or third-doubles entry to give the Valiants two uncontested points.

Even with the early edge, the result was in doubt until the final match was decided, with Valiant freshman Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) and Hunter's Gina Yeo going all the way to a supertiebreaker in third singles. Shaughnessy took the first set, 6-4, but came up just short in a second-set tiebreaker, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. However, the Valiant freshman emerged victorious, posting an 11-9 win in the tiebreaker for her first collegiate singles triumph and the team's second win of the year.

Senior Giovanna Lamorte (/) earned a big singles win for Manhattanville as well, posting a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Beth Chapnick at the fifth-singles flight.

The Valiants also captured one of the two doubles matches that were contested, as the tandem of senior Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y./The Northwood School) and junior Natalie Horton (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) outlasted Yeo and Chapnick in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5).

Manhattanville (2-6) will return to Freedom Conference play on Saturday, as the Valiants host defending champion Wilkes beginning at 1 p.m. at the Manhattanville Courts.
