ANNVILLE, Pa. – For the first time this year and the sixth time in his decorated Valiant career, Manhattanville men's tennis senior
Michael Capozzi (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/San Judas Tadeo) was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Week on Monday afternoon after a pair of easy wins on the court over the weekend.
Playing at the first-singles and first-doubles flights, Capozzi lost only one combined game in singles and doubles play in Saturday's 9-0 victory over FDU-Florham. He started his day with an easy 8-0 win alongside classmate
Dean Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) in doubles competition, and then had little trouble in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Andrew Scamporino at the top singles flight as well.
Despite a slow start, Capozzi still leads all Valiants with nine singles and eight doubles victories so far this season. The senior is 9-7 in singles competition, including 7-3 in tournament play, while also posting an 8-7 mark on the doubles court as well.
A two-time Freedom Conference Player of the Year and a three-time All-Conference first-team honoree, Capozzi is Manhattanville's all-time leader in singles wins, doubles wins and combined victories. Entering this week, the senior is a stellar 60-17 (.779) in singles play and 60-23 (.723) in doubles play, giving him 120 career victories as a Valiant.
Capozzi and Manhattanville (2-4, 2-0 Freedom) return to the courts on Saturday, as the Valiants travel to Eastern for a Freedom Conference match beginning at 1 p.m.
