WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Manhattanville men's tennis team had its quest for a fourth straight appearance in the Freedom Conference championship match halted on Thursday afternoon, as second-seeded King's (Pa.) defeated the third-seeded Valiants, 5-2, in the Freedom Conference Tournament semifinals at Kirby Park.
The Valiants, who were making their fifth straight Freedom postseason appearance, were unable to overcome the Monarchs for the second time in a week. Chris Cozzillio and Tony Bevevino led the home team with a pair of wins each on the afternoon, while freshman
Gabriel Berlingeri (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola) was a part of a pair of victories in a losing effort for Manhattanville.
The Valiants were only able to take one of the three doubles matches to fall behind early headed into singles play. The lone win came at third doubles, where Berlingeri and senior
Kyle McGowan (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) were able to outlast Nick Conte and Matt Grassi by a 9-7 score.
Berlingeri also was a part of the team's only singles win, as he defeated Andrew Panzitta by a 6-2, 6-1 margin at fifth singles. Senior
Dean Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and graduate student
Chris Lin (White Plains, N.Y./Eastchester) were both headed to third-set supertiebreakers when the match ended following the Monarchs' decisive fifth point, and so their matches went unfinished.
Manhattanville finishes the year with a 3-9 (3-2 Freedom) record, while King's (14-9, 4-1 Freedom) advances to the Freedom Championship match on Saturday at top-seeded Wilkes.
