Swarthmore Hands Men's Soccer First Loss of Season in 4-1 Match

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team fell on Sunday afternoon to the Swarthmore Garnet by the score of 4-1 in the closing game of the Garnet Alumni Classic in Swarthmore, Pa. Senior Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) scored for the Valiants in the losing effort in his first game of the season.

The game started out in the Garnet's favor as they accumulated four shots and a pair of corner kicks through the first 13 minutes of action. The next shot came with 26:06 to go in the first half and came off of a header from a pass that found its way to the front of the goal, and ended up in the back of the net to make the score 1-0 in favor of the home team.

The Garnet held their lead until the 37:09 mark of the second period when Swarthmore cashed in again on a shot that was sent towards the net and out of the reach of freshman goalkeeper Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) to make it 2-0. Swarthmore took their lead into the halftime break after outshooting the Valiants 11-1 in the first half.

After the break the Garnet continued their offensive attack and took the first three shots of the second period before senior defender Marco Blasetti (Yonkers, N.Y./Rye Country Day) broke the streak with a header shot that sailed above the crossbar. The score differential remained at two until there was 17:15 left in regulation when the Garnet tacked on their third goal on a rebound chance in front of the net.

Less than 10 minutes later Swarthmore added another on another rebound chance which the initial save was punched downward from Silber but deflected right to the foot of the Garnet's McWelling Todman for his second goal of the afternoon to increase the lead to 4-0.

Manhattanville broke the shutout streak with a tick under a minute remaining in the second half as Olazabal was left alone after a giveaway in the defensive zone by Swarthmore which allowed the senior to take the ball in a one on one situation with goalkeeper Jake Tracy which Olazabal sent home for his first goal of the season.

Earning the win was Tracy despite giving up the last minute goal, to move to 1-0 on the season after needing to make only three saves. Taking the loss was Silber (1-1) who made seven saves while yielding the four Garnet goals.

After the four-team classic came to a close three Valiants were named to the All-Tournament Team. Olazabal was one of two forwards to earn the honors along with freshman midfielder Eddie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East), and Blasetti on defense.

Manhattanville (1-1) will return to Purchase for their home opener this Wednesday, when they take on the Old Westbury Panthers who are also 1-1 after splitting their opening weekend games this season. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. with coverage available on GoValiants.TV.
