Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team ended a long afternoon with a defeat at the hands of the Stevenson Mustangs on Saturday evening by the score of 1-0.
The game started off with both teams from opposite sides of the MAC Conference 'umbrella' feeling one another out as neither side took control of possession of the game. Manhattanville did pick up the first two shots of game as seniors
Erick Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) and
Edmond Addison (Accra, Ghana/Lincoln (N.Y.)) registered shots but with no success.
Over the next 17 minutes of game time Stevenson outshot the Valiants by an 8-3 margin, including the eighth shot of the game that was sent past freshman goalkeeper
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) from inside the box to put the Mustangs up 1-0.
The two sides picked up a pair of shots each down the stretch of the first half with both of Stevenson's shots on target, while both of the Valiants' were off the net from both junior
Kyle Cassidy (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and senior
Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding).
The score remained at 1-0 well into the second half with both teams continuing their exchange of shots. The Valiants came within inches of tying the game when senior
Marco Blasetti (Yonkers, N.Y./Rye Country Day) headed the ball from about 10-yards out towards the left post with a crossing
Sebastian Siring (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) closing in, but the ball was just a bit ahead of Siring and went out of bounds along the end line.
Manhattanville got another superb chance to score on a free-kick opportunity from about 20-yards out in the 87th minute, but Stevenson goalkeeper Alex Zeidler made a diving save towards the left post to keep the shutout intact.
The Valiants attempted a last minute scramble to get the ball back into a better offensive situation but the final horn sounded and the Valiants suffered their third loss of the season.
Shots on the game were 14-12 in favor of Manhattanville, but shots on goal were in favor of the home team at 7-5. The Valiants also led in terms of corner kicks at a 6-5 margin.
Earning the win was Zeidler, who made five saves on the night to earn the shutout victory. Meanwhile Singson took the loss for the Valiants despite making six saves.
Manhattanville (3-3-2) will be back in action this Wednesday when they travel to a much closer distance as they head to Kings Point, N.Y. in a re-match of last season's come-from-behind 2-1 victory. Stevenson (4-5-0) will get right back to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Penn State-Brandywine at 1:00 p.m.
