Volleyball Drops Five-Set Marathon to Hunter, 3-2

Freshman Sam Miano had a season-best five kills on Friday night.
Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team battled back from a pair of one-set deficits, but the Valiants could not complete the comeback and fell to Hunter in a tough five-set affair, 3-2 (25-14, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-7) in non-conference action on Friday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Senior Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) had 10 kills for the Valiants to give her 204 for the season, making her just the fifth player in program history to record multiple 200-kill seasons and only the third to do so in back-to-back years. She also added three aces to give her sole possession of first place on the school's single-season aces ledger as well.

Freshman Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) led Manhattanville (13-11) with 11 kills, vaulting her all the way from eighth to third on the school's single-season kills list with 241. Classmate Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) also had the Valiants' only double-double of the night, leading all players with 31 assists and 15 digs.

On two occasions the Valiants fell down by a set, only to bounce back and even the match. In the second stanza, the visitors put down a match-best 13 kills and hit .222 to knot the match at one, led by five Camaj kills.

The fourth set was the most competitive of the night, featuring nine ties and seven lead changes. Manhattanville was down by five at 14-9 but came back with a 10-5 run that evened the score at 19. The frame was tied three more times before the Valiants finally broke through, getting two Primavera kills and two Camaj aces to close the frame on a 4-0 run and tie the match again.

After the two teams fought hard to split the first four sets, Manhattanville needed a fifth set for the first time all season in order to decide a winner. The Valiants jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the frame thanks to four Hunter errors, but the Hawks stormed back to register 12 straight points – helped out by six aces from Lucia Stosic – to take an insurmountable lead and pull out the win.

Manhattanville will face its toughest test of the year in its next match, as the Valiants host nationally ranked Eastern in a Freedom Conference matchup at Kennedy Gym on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The match will be video streamed on GoValiants.TV beginning at 6:55 p.m.
