Women’s Basketball Beat at the Buzzer by Wentworth

Caiazzo tallied 22 points and 17 rebounds in the loss to Wentworth.
Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The Manhattanville women's basketball team held a two point lead over Wentworth with two seconds remaining in the consolation game at the Emerson Tip-off Tournament on Sunday afternoon, but was defeated as the buzzer sounded on a clutch three point basket from sophomore Megan McLaughlin.

The Valiants were led by junior Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour), scoring a game-high 22 points to go along with 17 rebounds. After tallying 20 double-doubles last year, Caiazzo is expected to hold down the paint for Manhattanville as she did today.

The first half of play was close with either team gaining an edge. The biggest lead of the first half was held by Manhattanville with a score of 19-14 with about four minutes remaining. Wentworth scored seven unanswered points to take the lead back from the Valiants with two minutes remaining. Both teams went into the locker room tied at 24 after Caiazzo banked in a late first half layup.

Wentworth came out firing in the second half as the Leopards were phenomenal from beyond the arc. Wentworth shot 63.6 percent (7-11) from three-point territory as the team was led by McLaughlin with 18 points (4-4 from three). The Leopards pulled out to a 10-point lead over the Valiants just six minutes into the second half.

A 38-28 lead for Wentworth was not safe as the Valiants pulled together to come back. Freshman Candice Scott-Mason (Trenton, N.J./Ewing) offered Manhattanville a solid spark off the bench, contributing 12 points in 32 minutes of work. Scott-Mason and the Valiants went on a 13-0 run, taking a 41-38 lead over the Leopards with under 10 minutes to play.

The final nine minutes of play went back and forth with either team failing to hold onto a lead. There were nine lead changes in the final nine minutes until McLaughlin connected on the three-point dagger to give Wentworth its first victory of the season.

The Leopards led by one point with 30 seconds to go, 59-58. Manhattanville coach Kate Vlahakis elected to take a timeout at the 19-second mark to draw up a play for the Valiants that would pay off. Caiazzo received the ball inside the paint and connected on a layup while also drawing a foul that gave her a chance for the three point play. After making the free throw, the Valiants led 61-59 with nine seconds remaining.

Wentworth took a timeout with two seconds left on the clock and drew up a play for the hot handed McLaughlin. The Leopards inbounded the ball to the three-point specialist as McLaughlin connected with the buzzer sounding for her fourth three point basket of the day.

The Valiants shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the floor as they fail to hold on against Wentworth, falling to 0-2 on the season.

Manhattanville hopes to get its first win of the season when they play away at New York University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Live stats can be found on GoValiants.com.
