Solid Sophomore Effort Not Good Enough Against William Paterson

Ashley Franklin finished with 16 points in the loss to William Paterson
Box Score WAYNE, N.J. Sophomores Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) and Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) combined for 31 points on Thursday night, but the visiting Valiants could not overcome William Paterson in a 75-57 loss.

Franklin and Raaf both tallied a career high for points in a game as they finished with 16 and 15, respectively. Junior Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) also reached double-figures for the Valiants by contributing 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

The depth of William Paterson overwhelmed the Valiants as the Pioneers bench totaled for 29 points. Led by Floriana Borova with a game-high 17 points, the Pioneers had four players finish in double-figures to seal the victory over the Valiants.

The first two points of the game depicted how the game would go as Pioneers guard Brittany Harden stole the ball away from the Valiants and connected on a fastbreak layup. The Pioneers defense overpowered the Valiants offense by forcing 30 turnovers.

Manhattanville took its only lead of the game with 17:32 on the clock in the first half when Franklin connected on a layup, making it it 4-3. The next four minutes went back and forth until the Pioneers started to pour it on.

After a made basket by freshman Candice Scott-Mason (Trenton, N.J./Ewing) with 13:46 to go in the first half, the Valiants only trailed by one, 8-7. Scott-Mason and the Valiants could not keep it close as the Pioneers went on an 18-5 run to take a 26-12 lead with 9:18 remaining in the half.

The Valiants were heckled by the William Paterson defense and trailed the Pioneers 43-26 at halftime.

Despite Franklin connecting on the first points of the second half, the Valiants had a long comeback ahead of them. The Pioneers continued to create enough opportunities to run away with it.

Manhattanville trailed by 20 points or more for most of the second half and failed to make any sort of comeback against the Pioneers.

The Valiants shot 33.9 percent (19-56) from the floor, which included a 22.2 percent (6-27) first half field goal percentage while the Pioneers shot 34.7 percent (25-72) overall.

Manhattanville will next play away against SUNY Old Wesbury on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Live stats can be found on GoValiants.com.
