Volleyball Takes Two at Home Quad-Match; Downs Rutgers-Newark and Saint Elizabeth

Freshman Alissa Primavera led the Valiants with 19 kills on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball emerged unbeaten from its home quad-match on Saturday at Kennedy Gymnasium, as the Valiants started the day by besting Rutgers-Newark, 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-10, 25-19), and concluded play with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-15) triumph over Saint Elizabeth.

No Valiant had an exception day offensively in the victories, as freshman Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) led the squad with 19 kills and .333 hitting over the seven sets. Senior Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) reached double figures in three categories with 16 kills, 15 digs and 13 aces on the day, while junior Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) had a day-best 35 digs and freshman Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) had 46 assists and 19 digs.

In the first match of the day, Manhattanville shook off a tough second set to put away Rutgers-Newark in four frames. Camaj came one ace short of a triple-double with 10 kills, 10 digs and nine aces, and Primavera hit well with 15 kills on 35 attempts for .343 hitting. Quinabo also posted a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs.

The Valiants jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in the first set thanks to six straight points on Casino's serve, and Rutgers-Newark never got back within four points as the home team cruised to a set-one win.

Similarly, Manhattanville dominated the early portion of the second set, getting 13 straight points on Camaj's serve to open up a commanding 16-4 lead. Camaj had two aces and Primavera added six kills by herself in the run. But the Valiants allowed the Scarlet Raiders to somehow get back into the match thanks to a 12-1 run, and the visitors then scored four of the set's final five points to even the match.

The home team came out strong after the tough loss, as the serving of Camaj and junior Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) helped the squad to an early 14-4 advantage. This time the Valiants did not let up, using a 7-0 run on the serve of freshman Adrianna Alves (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) to help close out the set. The team followed up with a steady fourth set to close out the contest.

Manhattanville did not put up big offensive numbers in the second match of the day against Saint Elizabeth, but didn't need a ton of offense to pull off the straight-set win. Camaj led the team with only six kills, followed by five from senior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik).

The two teams traded runs early in the first set, with Manhattanville using a 4-0 run and a 6-0 spurt to take a 10-4 lead. The teams traded points for a few rotations before the home team scored seven-of-nine points to earn a 21-12 advantage and finally take control of the frame. Quinabo's serve also started with four straight points in the second set, and Manhattanville never really allowed the Screaming Eagles into the middle frame to take a two-set lead.

Down by two early in the final set, Manhattanville went on an 15-2 run capped off by three straight aces from Camaj to take an 18-7 advantage and clinch the victory.

Manhattanville (13-6), which is seven matches above .500 for the first time since 2001, will take another stab at picking up its first Freedom Conference win of the season on Wednesday when the Valiants travel to King's (Pa.) for a 7 p.m. matchup.
