Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's basketball team had four players finish in double-figures on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants dominated King's (Pa.) on Alumni Day by a final score of 88-68 in Freedom Conference play at Kennedy Gym.
Before the game, former Manhattanville basketball players
Simona Gordon '11,
Courtney Turner '12 and
Taylor Wilson '13 were honored with the hanging of a new 1,000-point banner in the gym, displaying their accomplished careers as Valiants. And once the game started, the current Manhattanville women's team certainly did not disappoint the former 1,000-point scorers as the Valiants could not be tamed by the Lady Monarchs all game.
Led by junior
Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) finishing with a team-high 24 points to go with six steals and five assists, the Valiants picked up their second conference win, improving to 6-10 overall (2-4 Freedom). Helping Pabon out on the offensive end was classmate
Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) and sophomore
Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career), tallying 17 points and seven rebounds each. Freshman
Candice Scott-Mason (Trenton, N.J./Ewing) also finished in double-figures, contributing 11 points and eight rebounds in the victory.
Manhattanville came out strong off the opening tip-off by scoring the first four points of the game with layups by Franklin and Caiazzo down low. The Valiants scored 54 total points inside the paint on Saturday against the Lady Monarchs.
The first 10 minutes of the game were played close until the Valiants started to pour it on. After a three-point basket by King's guard Kayla Feairheller, who finished with a game-high 32 points, the Lady Monarchs only trailed by two with 10:10 left in the first, 13-11. But after the three by Feairheller, the Valiants went on a 17-4 run in the next seven minutes to control a 31-16 lead with 3:10 left before halftime. Manhattanville continued to heat up in the last three minutes of the first half, as the Valiants took a 43-23 lead into halftime.
After a three-pointer by Lady Monarchs guard Jessica McHugh with 16:52 left, Manhattanville saw its lead dwindle to just 12. But following a timeout called by second-year head coach
Kate Vlahakis, Manhattanville regrouped. The timeout by Vlahakis sparked a 20-7 run for the Valiants, as Manhattanville jumped out to a 65-40 lead with 11:42 remaining. Manhattanville led by as many as 28 points in the game before pulling away with the crucial conference victory.
The Valiants shot an impressive 48.6 percent (35-72) from the floor, including a 62.5 percent (5-8) effort from beyond the arc. Pabon knocked down four of the five three-pointers that she attempted.
