Valiants Remain Unbeaten with Sweep of Maritime and John Jay at Home Tri-Match

Senior Amanda Materasso led the squad with 22 digs in two matches on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team remained unbeaten on the year thanks to a pair of victories on Saturday at the first Valiant Tri-Match of the 2014 season at Kennedy Gymnasium. The Valiant swept SUNY Maritime, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-13) to start the day, then closed the day with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-17) win over John Jay.

Sophomore Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) posted a team-best 12 kills on the day as the Valiants continued to spread around the offensive wealth. Sophomore Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) registered 35 assists to lead all players on the day, and senior Amanda Materasso (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) led all Valiants with 22 digs in the six sets.

In the first match of the day, freshman Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) led the Valiant charge with a match-high nine kills to go with four service aces and three digs in a straight-set win over Maritime. Materasso had a solid overall match with match-highs of 12 digs and five aces, while sophomore Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) and freshman Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) both chipped in five kills apiece.

Carly Lombardo was the Privateers' top player on the day, leading the squad with six kills, 11 digs and a pair of aces. Shannon Brady had five kills and six digs as well for Maritime (0-1).

The first set was close early, with the Valiants holding a slim 10-7 lead, before 10 straight points on the serve of Mackey. The freshman had two aces during the run, while Dattoma added three kills of her own. After a service error, Manhattanville closed the frame with five of the last eight points to take the lead.

Manhattanville used another big run to open up the second set as well, following a Maritime attack error with seven straight points on Dattoma's serve to turn a 15-11 lead into an insurmountable 23-11 advantage and eventually a two-set lead.

Maritime grabbed an early lead in the third set by scoring six of the first nine points, but the Valiants responded with a 13-3 run to re-take the lead and then closed out the match with an 8-1 spurt.

Playing in her first match of the year, Primavera posted the lone double-double against John Jay with a match-best 12 kills and 11 digs. Quinabo came just short of her own double-double with 22 assists and nine digs, and senior Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) led four Valiants to reach double-digit digs with 13.

Perla Pozo had a match-best 15 digs for John Jay (1-3), and Katherine Bonilla also had a solid all-around match with 12 assists, seven digs and three aces.

Manhattanville jumped out to an early lead in the first set against the Bloodhounds, scoring 13 of the first 18 points and never looking back.

The second set was close at the onset, with eight ties before either team reached nine points. An 8-2 Valiant run put the home team ahead, but an 8-1 John Jay run put the visitors ahead by a point at 18-17. But a service error and back-to-back kills from Primavera and Materasso put the Valiants back up by two, and the team closed on a 5-2 run to take a two-set lead.

The third set featured one big run and again it came from Manhattanville, an 8-1 run that turned a 7-6 lead into a 15-7 edge and put the Valiants in control the rest of the way.

The Valiants will look to remain unbeaten on Wednesday, when the squad plays its first road match of the season at New Rochelle beginning at 7 p.m.
