Late Rally By Valiants Turned Aside By St. Lawrence

Junior Morgan Parsons scored late for the Valiants.
Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.- The Manhattanville field hockey team controlled the edge in shots against St. Lawrence on Sunday afternoon, but the Valiants were unable to effectively beat Saints' goalkeeper Kim Haab, losing by a final score of 3-2 in the consolation match at the William Smith Classic.

Down by two goals with the clock winding down, Manhattanville (2-8) junior Morgan Parsons (Bear, Del./William Penn) buried a penalty shot in the 69th minute to pull the Valiants within one goal against St. Lawrence (3-4). With not much time left on the clock, the Saints would eventually prevail.

The Saints struck first in the game, coming in the 29th minute when it was Katie Klein beating freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) in front of the net. After the goal from Klein, both teams were silent on the scoring front for the remainder of the first half, allowing St. Lawrence to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

After about 15 minutes gone in the second half, the Valiants finally found the back of the net, as graduate student Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) collected a pass from sophomore Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College), beating Haab and tying the game at one.

With the game tied at one, St. Lawrence bounced back just two minutes after the Savage goal, taking back the lead when it was Mikaela Thompson striking a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades). The Saints eventually scored again in the 64th minute before the penalty-shot goal from Parsons in the 69th minute.

In net, Halloran made no saves on two first-half shots from the Saints while Hughes collected two saves, giving up two goals to St. Lawrence in the second half. For the Saints, Haab tallied eight saves on 15 Manhattanville shots, giving up both Valiant goals.

The Valiants will finally return home for their home-opener against Freedom Conference foe Wilkes on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Live video and live stats are available via GoValiants.com.
