Box Score 2 WAYNE, N.J. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team came back to split a pair of matches at the William Paterson University Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon, dropping a five-set heartbreaker to the host Pioneers before coming back to sweep Brooklyn at the WPU Rec Center.
Sophomore
Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) led Manhattanville (4-2) offensively on the day, averaging nearly four kills per set with 31 on .233 hitting in addition to 18 digs and three blocks. Classmate
Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) led the squad with 59 assists, 30 digs and eight service aces, while fellow sophomore
Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) also had a good day with 11 kills, 24 digs and three blocks.
The first match of the day was a marathon outing, as the Valiants came back from a set down on two occasions but ran out of momentum in the fifth set, falling 3-2 (25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 12-25, 15-8) to the Pioneers.
Primavera led all players with a season-high 21 kills and made it a double-double with 16 digs as well. She was helped by junior
Allison Regan (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) contributing eight kills, four aces and a match-high six blocks, as well as Quinabo with a big double-double of 38 assists and 17 digs to go with a match-best six aces.
After dropping the first set, Manhattanville responded well in the second set to even the score. The Valiants were down two at 11-9 before going on a 16-6 run to close out the set, including five straight points on the serve of sophomore
Adrianna Alves (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) and a kill and two aces from Regan that ended the frame.
The Valiants held a lead for much of the third set as well, and got within two points of a win at 23-20 following four straight aces from Quinabo and a Pioneer attack error. However, the Valiants did not record another point in the set, as two kills from Ariana Gomez and two Daniella Salermo aces helped the home team escape.
Manhattanville responded quite well from the tough loss, putting together its best set of the match to even the score again. The team limited Paterson to only four kills in the frame, and closed the set on an 11-2 run. Primavera has three kills during the run and closed things out with two aces sandwiched between a kill from freshman
Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue).
Unfortunately for the Valiants, William Paterson was nearly perfect in the decisive fifth set, putting down nine kills with only one error in picking up the victory. The difference in the frame was a 7-0 run that turned a 4-4 tie into an 11-4 Paterson lead that they never relinquished.
The second match of the day had much less drama, as Manhattanville posted 36 kills on the way to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-21) victory over Brooklyn.
Primavera led the Valiants again with 10 kills, followed by Dattoma and classmate
Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) with five apiece. Quinabo had the only double-double of the match for Manhattanville, racking up 21 assists and 13 digs.
Manhattanville controlled the match from the opening point against the Bulldogs, allowing Brooklyn to earn consecutive points only twice in the first set.
The second and third sets were somewhat closer, but in both frames the Valiants got the big points when they needed to in order to complete the sweep. Manhattanville scored the final four points of the second set to break a 21-all tie and take a two-set lead, while the team also scored six of the set's final eight points in the third set to end the match.
Manhattanville will continue non-conference play on Wednesday night, when the Valiants travel to Bard for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Raptors.
