Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team had 14 point scorers contribute to the large margin win over Pratt Institute today, Feb. 19. The Valiants defeated the Cannoneers 94-33 and had 11 players with a shooting percentage of 50.0 or above. The Crimson and White finished the game shooting 52.9 percent from the field and shot 75.0 percent in three-pointers in the first quarter. They also held Pratt to 12 points in the first half and zero made field goals in the second quarter.
Many Valiants shined tonight but sophomore
Jenn Balzarini (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By The Sea) and freshman
Carmen Rosemond (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) stood out throughout the game. Rosemond shot 66.7 percent from the field and was the Valaints third leading scorer as she totaled 10 points. She also led the team in rebounds and steals notching five and three respectively. Rosemond made her first steal in the second quarter and brought it up court to make a breakaway layup and a foul shot. Balzarini excited the crowd in the fourth quarter as she started an eight point scoring run for the Valiants to close out the game. She made a three-pointer with under two minutes left and another with 30 seconds remaining in the game. She finished the night shooting 100.0 percent from three-point range.
The Valiants (21-3, 16-3 Skyline) shot 75.0 percent in three pointers in the first quarter. Junior
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) opened up the game sinking a three that was assisted by sophomore
Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead). Junior
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) quickly followed Shore's shot with another three-pointer. Johnson-Desilvia was the finial Valiant to sink a three in the first to put Manhattanville ahead 11-2. Johnson-Desilvia and Coutu's threes were both assisted by Shore.
Manhattanville's defense held Pratt (7-13, 4-7 ACAA) to zero made field goals in the second quarter. The Cannoneers totaled six points throughout the second but they were all made free throws. Six steals were made in the second and two of them were turned into baskets. Rosemond and freshman
Madison Fields (Grantsville, Utah/Grantsville) both turned their own steals into baskets as they took the ball coast-to-coast for breakaway layups. Other Valiants who made steals were Johnson-Desilvia, junior
Karina Cruz (Kissimmee, Fla./Poinciana) and freshman
London Scott (Farmers Branch, Texas/Newman Smith). Scott also totaled three second chance points in the second. She got the offensive rebound and sunk a layup as she was fouled. She made her granted foul shot to put Manhattanville up by 39 points.
One stand out play in the third was when freshman
Olivia Kelley (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) grabbed the defensive rebound and pushed the ball up court. The Valiants were struggling to find an open shot and the shot clock was running out of time. Kelley was passed the ball at the three-point line and found freshman
Lauren Krystall (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) on the cut down to the basket. Kelley hit Krystal with only a few seconds remaining on the clock. Krystall was able to make a layup before time expired to put the Valiants ahead 68-21.
The longest scoring spree the Valiants had in the fourth was eight points twice. The first spree was split by Scott and sophomore
Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School). Scott made two layups and Valentin made one coast-to-coast layup after making a steal and a second layup after Scott made a steal. Later in the quarter Krystal made two back to back jumpers assisted by freshman
Julia Torreso (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) and freshman
Azurae Taylor (Orlando, Fla./Windermere). Sophomore
Nicole Trapp (Moodus, Conn./Nathan Hale-Ray High School) and Balzarini had the second eight-point scoring spree to close out the game. Trapp made a second chance layup sandwiched between Balzarini's two three-pointers.
The Valaints will play their final regular season game this Saturday, Feb. 22. They will face Skyline Conference opponent Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y. at 12:00 p.m. If Manhattanville defeats the Gryphons, they will secure a second place seed in the Skyline tournament and host a semifinal game on Thursday, Feb. 27.
